A pack a day (and assuming no price rises - unlikely) adds up to £62,500 over a 25yr mortgage term ;)

That is pretty impressive! And price rises will add a fair chunk to that too. I really need to get serious about quitting.
Motivation is everything. Without it no one would ever do anything, change anything, achieve anything.

I went through years of this with my first husband. He was told to stop smoking, oh, I don't know how many times. More times than he'd had hot dinners. Different people, qualified professionals, many many people. No one ever managed to get it through his head, he never took it on board himself, and until he did, whatever anyone else said was useless. I am firmly convinced that he'd be here today, fit and healthy and being able to do all the things he wanted to do, if it hadn't been for smoking. He wasn't the only one. I have seen so many people whose health has been irreparably damaged by that habit.

It's the same with losing weight, although less likely to kill you (although even that can be arguable). I used to go on to a site where people were supposedly 'calorie counting' and they'd come back and say 'oh I can't give up my chocolate' or 'oh I went out and my friends persuaded me to drink wine and vodka, and then we went for a curry' or 'my mum said, go on, a little bit won't hurt...' or 'just one more biscuit (or three)' and you could tell, there was just not enough motivation there. I'm as bad. I've been fr*gging about trying to lose weight for sooooo long, I've finally decided to take it by the scruff of the neck and really DO it. I'm coming up to my 76th birthday in a couple of weeks' time and I do NOT want to get to 80 and still be trying to lose weight.

I agree, some people can decide on a thing and do it whereas others just can't get their head into it and do what is required. My DH had a scare many years ago, a sudden chest infection which 'frit the life out of him' as he says. He never smoked from that day on, remembering the feel of not being able to breathe. Yet, how many scares did my first husband have - myocardial infarction, coronary bypass, later on, strokes. Not one of those scares nor anything anyone said actually got through to him, because he never found the motivation within himself.

My dad was the same as your first husband, he had health scare after health scare, and it was only after a major stroke that he finally quit. He had tried everything before that point; patches, gum, even acupuncture, but he could never quite manage it. Unfortunately, I think I'll be the same way as I have seen the effects of smoking on my dad, yet I am still doing it. It's exactly the same with dieting. I will start off great, but can never seem to keep it up and no matter how determined I am at the beginning of the day, I can easily 'slip up' later on.
BTW, congratulations on finding a diet that works :T I like Dukan's ideas, I read his book last year and do think that it is an well thought out plan - it's just a bit too strict for me, given my huge lack of willpower! I also really liked his 'every little helps' approach in the section that gives you hints and tips on how to burn more calories (such as blasting yourself with cold water when in the shower so your body burns calories while trying to get back up to the correct temperature).

Oh you tease! :p I'm curious now.

Your not filming At Home with Matryoshka, are you? :rotfl:

Fred - I love the idea for the exercise challenge! Can you please sign me up to all three challenges. I will aim for time, and travel to New Zealand (I'll go and visit my grandad over there, lol!). For the team challenge, I have fish, so would go in the 'other pets' team.

I don't really know what you mean by "instant" porridge, but you can make any porridge in the microwave in a few minutes. The oat-so-simple packs are a perfect size and help you measure the milk, but once you get used to it you can save money and just buy a big sack of porridge oats.

The only possibe down-side is the fact that if you don't soak the oats overnight you really have to make porridge with milk rather than water, but skimmed works.

I used to be bad for skipping breakfast (so starving by lunchtime and ate way too much ) but I've recentl started having porridge and a glass of fruit juce every morning - has totally removed my urge to snack through the day :T

Oh, I did my first weigh-in on Sunday so am pretty happy with -1lb.

Edit: Re porridge, I like it thick so I tend to skimp on the milk and cook it for en extra minute (stir half way thourgh). I'm also Scottish so salt not sugar ;)

but really you want to be using full fat milk for the health benefits it brings, and if your low carbing at least 40% of your cals should come from fat

Thanks for the chart Fred. Great idea for this months challenge.

I am going to travel from London to New Zealand by time, which according to Google will take 24 Hours 55 mins.

My friend has just moved there so looking forward to seeing her. :rotfl:

Could you also put me down for the - 5lb challenge and the pet challenge. I have No Pets at the moment.

    Cheers,

I'm not low carbing - I just like porridge lol. Sorry to be a bit dense, but what's the benefit of full fat over skimmed or semi-skimmed (I don't like cream, so I'm not too fond of full fat, semi skimmed is my preference).

@Fred: Can you add me in for the 5lb challenge, I'd like to take travel time to Sydney (23 hours) I have no pets and am from Scotland.

    Thank you!

In that case, can i do a return, so if its 10hr 55min there, it would be 21hrs 50min return?

Is it best to weigh yourself everyday like my wii fit says, or just once a week? At the moment im just doing it once a week, but would it be more accurate to weigh my self every day. I get really disheartened if it goes up even a tiny bit which is y i dont like doing it everyday.

    Thanks for this, lolly101.

Back to smoking, my late daughter's father-in-law was the worst. He was ill for years and then nearly died - he had a hiatus hernia which required urgent surgery, was preventing him breathing (the stomach squeezes back up into the chest through the gap in the diaphragm), was in critical care then high-dependency then a surgical ward, all this took ages and obviously he couldn't smoke, couldn't even get out of bed. Back home, he'd effectively stopped smoking. And would you believe it? Next time I saw him, he'd re-started. The argument was 'I smoked since I was 15 and the habit is too hard to break'. He eventually died of a stroke. It was unbelievable. He said things like 'oh well, they've changed their minds now about smoking, they used to think it was good for you' - he remembered being given cigarettes by Red Cross nurses on his return from Dunkirk! Incredible.

One of the beauties of the Dukan system is that you get a daily update and daily motivation. Reading the book would not be enough. I wonder how DM readers are getting on - they had a week of focusing on Dukan, that was where I got the website from and that was when I decided to do it properly.

I don't miss anything. We went for a coffee at the RSPB place at Rainham Marshes, lots of lovely home-made cakes made by the volunteers in the coffee bar, DH got a slice and said 'I'll share it with you' and I said 'No thanks'. Home-made fruit cake is something that I loooove. Just not worth it any more to get where I want to be.

PS: mandz1 I've always preferred weighing myself daily. First thing in the morning after going to the loo and before eating or drinking anything. Daily weighing, and a daily report which you complete, is also part of the Dukan system. A lot depends on (forgive me) whether or not you're constipated. I seem to have gained 0.2 kg from yesterday but I'm sure I haven't really.
