Eric - thanks for your advice I will just keep on plodding I think - I have a long way to go and have to remember I am only 4 months into running :)

Don't benchmark your times against the menfolk... efrieze is right, men run faster!

When I started running I looked at race results and compared my times to others in my age/gender group to get a very rough idea of how I was doing.

My PBs are nothing to shout about (middle of the pack) but I still take pride in my running. I run good distances annually, keep going year round whatever the weather, vary my distances, tackle tough off road routes and almost never do the exact same route twice. It doesn't have to be just about speed :).

efreize well done on your first 5km of the year! :j For what it's worth I've never gone sub 25 mins either, and probably never will!

I'm in the throws of leaving work so its constant alcohol, meals out and rubbish lunches with people so this week is a complete right off. No gym either!! But i did walk to work today, and i will go to the gym on sunday!!

Men aren't comparable to women, you've probably just hit a bit of a wall where you need to dig in a bit more!

This might sound like an excuse but I think men are built to run faster than women. From people that I know, the women and men could appear to be of similar fitness but the men can always run faster.

I did my first 5km run of the year yesterday, having started running in 2008 and achieved a PB of just under 28 mins at my peak of fitness. Did it in 35 mins this time so wasn't too unimpressed with myself. Doubt I could ever do a sub 25 mins but i would like to aim for a 10km in 60 mins ultimately.

the distance and speed do not matter

what matters are the intensity (high heart rate) and the duration

have just seen this thread - am delighted to have lost half a stone in 3 weeks, finding it not too hard except about 5pm when I get the munchies, try to stick to fruit rather than crisps etc. Have also increased my exercise- can only walk at the moment as monumentally unfit but have invested in zumba for the wii & will start that after my holiday - next week - I always excercise more on holiday.
