i doubt that we'll hear from the OP again ...she hasn't heard what she wanted to, and sadly I don't think that we will have convinced her that she was in the wrong!
I have to agree, but I'm hoping that she is at least still reading.
It bothers me that someone can be so naive at her age.My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

The OP is a troll. Follows the usual troll pattern of lengthy first post, designed to irritate people and evoke strong responses. Then, come back intermittently and only respond to one question at a time, with no more than one or two sentences, tops.
When people start to repeatedly question if the OP is a troll, they then return with a slightly longer post, that still doesn't reveal very much and ignores any advice given. Then back to only returning intermittently, and so the cycle repeats until no one can be bothered to answer anymore.
Then they start a new thread.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -

I've never understood why trolls troll.
What can possibly be the point of sitting down and creating a make-believe scenario?
What sort of enjoyment can they get out of that?
How incredibly sad and empty their lives must be.0 -
You did not say how much you are earning. I haven't read all the pages, but you didn't say that in your introductory post.
Do I assume that you are not paying anything at all at the moment, but are shocked because you've been asked to cough up a third of the household expenses, £100, and you think this is too much?
It does seem to be an old-fashioned concept nowadays, but long before we had 'phones and things' to buy, most of us were expected to pay towards our keep BEFORE we had any of our own money left over to spend on what we liked. This has the advantage of instilling the idea that 'nothing is for nothing', the roof over your head and all that goes with it does cost money! I bet you use unlimited hot water, you expect your washing done and food as and when you want it! It's the convenience of living at home that you like, isn't it?Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

In that case you can easily afford £100 a week. You would be left with £700 a month to spend or to save. You should be ashamed of yourself. 'None of your friends pay so much....' I can well believe this, because paying your way while living at home has become an unfashionable concept (see the BBC3 series 'Working Girls') and just because some parents are over-indulgent and stupid there is no reason why your Mum should be.
You don't want to help subsidise your Mum's mortgage, but I bet if she dies you'll expect an inheritance from her house property!Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

You poor, poor love.
When I first started work my Mum used to take my pay packet and give me spending money.
40 years on, we are still very close.
I wouldn't like to wonder what your relationship with your Mum will be like in 40 years.
Yes, this is what happened from DH's first week at work as a 16-year old apprentice. When did that idea go out of the window to the extent that sons and daughters living at home, and enjoying all the facilities and comforts of home, expect to get it all for free? 'Phones and things' are more important. I've even heard of people of this age who are in deep debt and they pay nothing at all towards living at home! Debt has been incurred on 'going out, clothes, phones and things' and nothing at all on normal living expenses.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Thank you for this.
What troubles me is the fact that this poster is apparently a graduate. She wants to go back to do her Master's, presumably then giving up her job to do so? What is education worth, if this is the result?
I have a good honours degree in Behavioural Sciences. I have never in my life lived anywhere for free. I am the generation that got paid a full grant - I might not have done, but my then husband was long-term sick and his income wasn't enough to be taken into account.
I have 2 granddaughters. The eldest works for the local authority as a youth worker. She lives in a one-bed council flat. I think her income is about the same as the OP, but from that income she has deductions of pension, rent and council tax. She then has food, heating, water etc to pay for. She doesn't have much left at the end of the month! I think her only real 'non-essential' is her Staffie pet, and she values him because it's a fairly rough area. She was unemployed and homeless a few years ago and everything she has now, she values greatly, because she knows what the alternative is.
The other one, who's about the OP's age, works part-time as a picker for internet grocery orders at a big supermarket 'home shopping centre'. Even though she's part-time she still pays towards living at home. She has managed to save up and buy a car and is about to take her driving test - this will save her a lot because up to now she's been using taxis to get to work for 5 am.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.
