My friend offered me her flat for £500 a month all in. thats all bills rent - everything. I'd take it but I'm trying to save up to go back to Uni to do my Masters. My Mum knows this but is still insisting I pay £100 a week. She doesnt seem to care about my future.

    Sweetheart,

Now I have calmed down a bit I actually feel incredibly sorry for you! You have no idea what real life is like have you?

Have you checked that the £500 your friend wants, includes:

    Council Tax
    Water Rates
    Electric/Gas
    TV Licence

I know you said everything, but unfortunately you haven't come across as someone who knows the reality of "real life" bills.

If I take away the selfishness, and the fact that you are older than me, and try and treat you as a 16 year old ( the age I was when I started out in the real world ) then these are the things that when I was living with my mum, I didnt realise she had to pay!

It wasn't until it was pointed out to me that I knew these existed.

She cares plenty about your future. BUT the immediate bills are more important. It doesn't matter if you wait another year to do your masters. It does matter if you not paying bills and not moving out means she can't pay the bills and loses her home. Your home.

A Masters isn't essential. A roof over your head is.

And £160 council tax is perfectly reasonable - I live in Edinburgh, and my full council tax and water is £250 per month!

Maybe you shouldn't have to contribute towards her car but it would be a nice thing to do! I suspect your friends £500 is not as all in as you think - I bet it doesn't include food for a start.

I dont pay for her car

And just how will you fund your lifestyle when you go back to Uni and give up work or work part-time?

Who will buy you your clothes, phones and stuff then?

    1 question:
When you were at Uni before, how much money did your Mum give you towards your living expenses?

She didnt give me a thing. I paid my fee's myself. I lived at home and took a part time job.

I probably didnt get my point across as I wanted. My point was, if my friend can offer me an all in apckage for £500 - fopr everything - all bills - the lot, then how can my Mums monthly outcome be over £1200?

I tried to speak to her today and told her that I wanted to go back to Uni but she said she that has no bearing on what I give her.

Is this a flat share? Is it a place on your own? How many bedrooms? Does it include food, toiliteries?

Is it your friends house i.e her mortgage?

£500 to your friend is for a room in her house. Your mum wants £400 for a room in HER house.

Is your friend going to do your washing, cooking and cleaning?

If its a flat there will probably be factors fees too. Mine are over £400 a year.

The £500 'all in' probably sounds great but the little extras add up. Thats before you even think about food/toiletries/travel etc.

Added my points to your list.

But in staying at home she saved you a fortune in rent and bills in accommodation. So she in fact gave you more than you know.

Get real! She has no legal obligation to house you - the LEAST you can do is contribute. Goodness me. We are the same age and I find it impossible to believe ou have this attitude.

My God! This is like pulling teeth!

Take off the personal things like the car, pet insurance (unless it's YOUR pet, in which case YOU ahould be paying that) and any other bill that is not house-related.

How much is your Mum paying out each month?

Look - I have already said, the bills were over £1200 (with extras) but she only wants 1/3 of the utilities and mortgage. that is £400 each.
