Interesting point Mr B, I've not long purchased 6x50kgs (loose bagged) surefire ovals for a total of just over a hundred quid. As I am not in a smoke control zone, I think I'll experiment with a 25kg bag of these>

Fair bit cheaper than the ovals when bought loose @ 50kgs bag.

    Regards........

Good luck with it. I tried burning coal and had huge soot build-ups in no time at all. I'd much prefer to burn coal - it's cheaper, gives a better flame pattern etc, but my stove doesn't like it (and the maker says not to use it). I hope your Villager is happier!

I checked manu owners manual today, it don't like if I can call it, normal coal, I'll stick with surefire, proven at chucking out heat and, not too harse on the liner. And if I remeber correctly, surefires were a recommendation from yourself!

Log retainer snapped today, looks like nickel base rods required to repair, should have some at work? Just over £40 to replace, which was same for baffle plate, which I knocked up in less than an hour, I really need to get into making stove spare parts, incredible prices!!!

  • Anyone else burning CPL Stoveheat pre-packed on a Parkray room heater? I'm getting loads of ash from only a few hours of use.

I might be wrong Welda (who, me?) but I think Surefire is what we down here call Taybrite, in which case it's the best VFM I've yet found.

Anyway, I think I owe you an apology, as I may have misread your post. I thought you meant you'd been considering a move to housecoal. It's tempting when you see the price!

I'm currently still burning logs but as the temperature starts to drop, I'm eyeing my coal bunker and wondering how long it will be before I switch over.

Sorry to hear about the breakage. Normal wear and tear would you say?
  • What would you say is the heat difference between anthracite and ovals?

I bought 10Kg of CPL Homefire "ovals" at Booths... it took about 2 hours to get any heat out of it.. it did burn for a looong time.. but barely noticable heat. It turned to ash, which didn't fall through the grate.. The coal I've been getting from the merchant (I believe it's either "Best coal nuts" or "Welsh anthracite".. see link below) is so hot it melted the plastic off my clothes rack, and melted some of my non cotton socks! Night and day difference... no comparison whatsoever. I've got half a bag of the ovals left I can't really see the point in using them, so will keep them back and chuck in with other coal, to make it last longer Having said that I don't know about CPL products generally, IME they seem to be lower output, expensive, even when compared to basic logs.. I just get the feeling it's inferior stuff The coal merchant I'm using is these guys, they seem very good prices and honest product. They will also fill a 50k bag straight off the conveyor belt and carry it to my car, which is handy for me because I think it would break my back http://cheshiretownandcountryfuels.com/types-of-coal
  • Just rang round today Mr Lumb in Castleford is selling coke blend at £6.65 for 25kg, maxibrite mixed ovoids at £7.40 for 25kg and excel at £8.25 for 25kg all in sealed bags.

Possibly product names vary from area to area, but from what you mentioned a while back, your Taybrite, was a dead ringer for Surefire Ovoids up here.

Nothing to apolgise for Mr B, I maybe did not explain myself very well, which aint hard for me!

Yes normal wear and tear, super-heating, cooling bowed, then last week "dink" snapped in two. These things are difficult to repair when subjected to high heat, no joy with cast rods today, got some bronze brazing rods arriving tomorrow, hopefully oxy-acet will aleviate laminating that appeared to happen in arc mode, last chance, then the bin if unsuccessful?

I free hand plasma cut a piece of 10mm plate to keep me going for a while :j

Depends on how big your house is and if you have other sources of heat. We use about 10kg of smokeless briquettes a day to heat our small cottage on a clearview vision 500 - so a tonne should last 100 days.
