OK thats not cheap but having experimented a bit I am starting to think that you get what you pay for - especially in our multi-fuel stove. Time will tell but so far I am using less coal per day and getting better heat than I was with the cheaper stuff.
As I said the ovals are still glowing after being in the stove for 12 hours overnight which is pretty good I think.
Are you turning the air vent down completely to get the coal to last this long?0 -
Try supertherm, its just as good as homefire but cheaper! Also its produced by the same company as produces the homefire they just don't push the sale of it! Guess there's more profit in homefire!!!!0

When I had a large open fireplace. It was always cheaper to get a tipper load of wood delivered for the winter for approx £50. No good for small fireplaces though, or if you haven't got space for all that wood!
You wouldnt get a tipper load for £50 these days. Quote I got for seasoned hard wood was £120.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
Just been using an open fire since I'm moved into a new place in September.. Was buying CPL bags at £4.50 per 10kg. Started getting my coal from a local merchant, in Congleton, instead.. they charge £14.25 for 50kg bag of coal, or £15.25 for 50kg bag of big cobs.. 50p for the bag itself, but you can reuse the empties or get 50p back... free delivery in cheshire, minimum order 3x50kg.. Compared to the CPL stuff I was buying, this coal burns way way hotter, lights quicker, but also burns quicker and leaves less ash.. they say it's high quality coal mined in sheffield, and described it as "the real stuff" ;-) What is this... Anthracite?? Coke?? It does seem to work out better value, The CPL stuff also leaves solids after burning.. which suggests to me it's lower content.. I'm sort of new to this though, so I wonder if the other types of coal would be better ie. the stuff formed into ovals.. what is the point of it.. so it burns longer?? What is the best thing to do with coal dust??0

I'm not sure what this particular alternative product is but I can tell you that the main purpose of manufactured products is they are smokeless. If you are not living in an area where smokeless fuel is compulsory than, personally, I wouldn't waste my money on it. Good quality housecoal is more economic to burn and open fires are designed to burn it.0 -

Interesting point Mr B, I've not long purchased 6x50kgs (loose bagged) surefire ovals for a total of just over a hundred quid. As I am not in a smoke control zone, I think I'll experiment with a 25kg bag of these>

Fair bit cheaper than the ovals when bought loose @ 50kgs bag.
