Cheap Mobile Contracts Article Discussion

  • It's probably been discussed, but here's a good place to vent about the MSE phone article and in particular OMIO and MoneySupermarket.

Firstly, I have a lot of time for HUKD and this place - they don't ignore websites that refuse to give cashback (Three, Ebuyer and so on). Whereas OMIO and MoneySupermarket do.

They're not true comparison sites - they ignore many of the larger retailers and basically anyone who refuses to give them cashback. I know it's "their ball and they can decide who can play with it" but I don't think somewhere like MSE should be giving webpage space to companies who deliberately choose to ignore the best deal even if it's not in their interests. In all honesty, they would make considerably more money in the long run by allowing it! HUKD I'm pretty sure runs at a considerable profit for instance (The only major customer I've found they don't allow is "Very" and that's a long-gone sore legal point for the site).

It's not like the insurance comparison sites either - the majority of them don't list sites like Direct Line because they're not allowed to! I'm pretty sure Three and Tesco would be delighted to be included - they often have the best deals (for instance, Tesco currently have the best deal if you want lots of minutes and 2gb of tethering on 4G).

Sorry, that's my rant for the day :money:
The smaller the monkey the more it looks like it would kill you at the first given opportunity.
  • Why have you not included the excellent the peoples operator tpo?
  • I have a new smartphone which is in use a lot, only pay £7.50 a month (Giffgaff SIM only goodybag), and the phone was good value:
1 I bought a new Samsung Galaxy S3 (the model before the model before last) - quite happy with all it does, and much cheaper than latest model. I haven't looked, but I expect the price is dropping all the time.
2 At home it's linked to our wifi, so monthly roaming costs are always well within allowance. If I want to do something heavy like going onto Youtube, I do this at home if I can.
    - Giffgaff now allow you to buy your new month early, so if you do go over (and I haven't yet) you don't have to pay higher charges while you wait for the calendar to click over.

Just reading this. The bit about costs if you eat up your allowance on Tesco mobile, it should be noted that you can cap your contract with a safety buffer.
  • Regarding cheap mobile phone deals, 'Grumbler' hit the nail on the head with the very first post in this thread: "When comparing contracts and PAYG it would make sense to compare disadvantages as well, not only advantages."
There is an EE deal around at the moment, that MSE is touting as 'unbeatable', but I'd have to encourage extreme caution when getting into any kind of contractual arrangement with EE. Apart from the fact that Kevin Bacon is just THE most annoying man, my own experiences with Orange (now part of EE), and similar horror stories related by others, have led me to the decision that - if EE were the only company offering mobile phone services, I wouldn't have a mobile.

True to a large extenet; but I have two contracts with them where I not only get the bundles but make a profit. Of course, they are cashback deals; I will sup with the devil if I win and he loses.
  • Hi all

Has anyone been successful in getting the top deal quoted on MSE recently? It was from EE for one year - £15.99 a month but with a £95 Amazon voucher, making it very good value. I tried using the link and code this morning, but the code wouldn't work. I contacted EE and they say the the offer has been withdrawn. MSE said it had been negotiated to last until the 31st. March (I've just looked at the MSE article again and see that it has disappeared! The code was MSE95SIMO. Thanks

Do not use EE - You will regret it if you do...
Take it from a former EE customer - if EE were the only supplier left - I would use two baked bean tins and a length of string instead !!
  • II have found Giffgaff to be the cheapest mobile deal. For £5 I get a Hokey Cokey Goodybag. This giv es me
    • 100 + extra UK minutes
    • 300 UK texts
    • 100MB Internet
    • Free to giffgaff
    • Even though I start with 100 minutes this increases by the number of minutes a caller talks to me. If someone talks to me for 20 minutes, 20 minutes are added to my account. I never run out of minutes and only spend £5 a month.
  • I got a nice smartphone for Christmas (thanks, DH!) and am trying to untangle the best plan/contract to buy. I don't use the phone much (don't download music/vids). Looking at PAYG and "rolling contracts," I'm confused - GiffGaff's "Goodybags" are supposedly PAYG, but they say "per month." Isn't that the same as a rolling contract? Does that just mean that you buy a "goodybag" and whatever you haven't used by the end of that month expires??

    TIA!
