I just upgraded my sim only tariff from some old monthly rolling contract £17.38 to an £18 a month unl minutes, unl text, 6GB data for 12 months, that is £4 cheaper than usual deal. I simply sent the online adviser links to uswitch and other comparison websites and she promised to beat the offer. Now, I am awaiting a brand new phone I purchased on 02 so that I dont get locked into a 24m contract. So happy!

I have already posted the following on the Piggybacking thread earlier today but it occurred to me that the comment may be more helpful and reach a wider audience if repeated here:

"A company called Freedompop have been operating in the USA for some time. Last Summer they launched a beta service in the UK, piggybacking off of Three. Their basic service offers a free package of 200 mins, 200 texts and 200Mb of data. I have been using them since Sept 2015 and, as a low user, have found their service fine. In particular, their customer support, via a UK landline number, is excellent.
I am amazed that they are not included in MSE's Mobile piggybacking list. Equally amazing, I have not been able to find any coverage of them on MSE. FreedomPop runs on the Three network, so coverage and data speeds is great. For heavier users, extra amounts of talk, text and data can be purchased.
Their business model may result in them going the same way as other "free" providers in the past but they have been around for some time in the US. The word needs spreading in the UK!!!!"
Due to the quality of calls using the VOIP app you couldn't make Freedompop your main number. I thought about using them for the backup phone but when the time comes, I'd probably put a Three Data Rewards SIM in it for 200 free MB/month and no strings.

With a view to getting rid of a landline that is only used for broadband is there a mobile package that offers an alternative to a 'light user' of sms, calls and broadband or am I being unrealistic? Thanks.

I'm thinking of getting the Samsug Galaxy J3, through Three:
    Free handset
    1GB data
    300 minutes
    £16.00 per month

I would only require about 100 minutes, do you think it's possible if I ask to get it cheaper? Never done it before.

How much data do you class as "light useage" ?
The phone calls and sms's are no problem - just the data !!
Then there's the problem of getting your contacts to phone a mobile number - which does cost considerably more than a landline - unless they call from their mobile !

Is the phone important? I rcently oredered a cashback contract for someone with the 2GB and 1,000 minutes for £3.50 a month. and could have got it cheape with 1GB and less minutes.

Not really, but could be slighy better than my current one - HTC Desire 610. I looked at those cashback ones, but am I reading right that you have to send a bill each month to receive it?

No. Just after six months, then usually every three.

I would seriously avoid these "on-going cashback" contracts - you do hear of many cases where people do not receive any payment and end up paying more than they expected !
They can make you jump through hurdles in their attempts to weedle out of paying you....

I run multiple contracts for myself and about a dozen others for several people. I've been doing it for years and we wouldn't do anything but a cashback deal. Long live the (now very few) who stuff up and don't follow the ground rules. No hoops needed with me and they never weedle...
