Currys, Dixons & PC World BEWARE!!!

I will never shop in a Currys or other associated stores again. Beware if you are thinking of spending money in Currys, Dixon’s or PC World.

After purchasing a Vacuum Cleaner 9 weeks ago which was overheating and cutting out I thought it would be straight forward to return to Curry’s St Helens for an exchange or refund.
(The Vacuum cleaner had only been used on 5 or 6 occasions as we have wood flooring throughout
most of the house).

Anyway, it seems that Curry’s stores don’t bother with the Sales of Goods Act 1979 and have their own laws.

Never had any problems at any other stores with returning goods and this was actually reported and covered by Which magazine in 2001 stating that staff from stores of Currys and Dixons were wrongly stating that responsibility lay with the Manufacturer. Five years later and they are still at it, passing the buck.

It is Currys responsibility as the seller to resolve the issue and yet Currys refused to take the vacuum cleaner from me. I certainly don’t want to have to take a days holiday to wait for them to send out an engineer which
from reading many other reports on other sites tend to not turn up anyway.

From start to finish there was no indication that Currys wanted to help the customer and they simply wanted to pass the responsibility on elsewhere.

Needless to say that after stating the Sales of Goods Act 1979 in the store I was asked to leave the premises by one of their vertically challenged Security Guards stating that I was trespassing on their property!!!

I think that they are in need of some well overdue Consumer Law and Customer Service training, fast!!I

It comes as no surprise that in a recent Comparisat (May 2006) study that Currys & Dixons came bottom of the chart because of poor service, with the most unhappy customers.

As a student I worked for PC world

I can honestly say they treat their staff horrifically and their customers even worse.

THey will never get a penny of my money or any of my friends - as I've gone on about them often enough.
  • If the store aren't playing ball with you there is a chance that you should be able to get your money back if you paid by credit card. Just call your credit card company and explain what has happened. They will issue the store with a 'charge back' which is the technical term the bank use to desribe the process by which the store gets the opportunity that it legitimately debited the funds from your card. In this case it would seem that you should get your money back.

Good luck - don't be put off by them.

    HP.
  • report to trading standards, you can even email them...look for you local county council.:money:
  • You are quite right :(
I learned that one many years ago. I recall once when browsing in the shop - Dixon's I think it was - I happened to be near the enquiry/returns counter. There was a long queue of folk taking things back, and trying to get some sense about what to do about their faulty products.

No one could give two hoots about the customers concerns. No one was being attended to, and tempers were rising. I left the shop.

And blow me, I happened to be in there a couple of weeks latter with a friend, and the same scenario was happening all over again. Folk trying to get recompense for faulty goods. And no one dealing with them.

    as you say:

    Further to my initial post:-

The issue here is that Currys should take responsibilty as the seller and resolve the problem themselves, its not for me to make a 20 mile round trip with a vacuum cleaner for them to then say they wont keep the vacuum cleaner in the store until its either fixed or exchanged. They expect me to start phoning technical helplines and arranging engineers to look at the product.

I've actually been into another Currys store, with Consumers Direct on the phone as I was at the counter and explained the position.
There the problem was resolved with an exchange by a normal member of staff, not the manager and so how the narrow minded and stubborn Manager of the St Helens branch couldnt resolve the matter I do not know.
It does seem if you are lucky you may actually get an employee that can use their common sense and make a rational decision.

The manager of St. Helens branch where I had the problem, Mr. Bernie Morris couldnt care less about the customers and couldnt be bothered to even
discuss what the problem was with vacuum cleaner.

How he considers 9 weeks to be a reasonable amount of time for a vacuum cleaner to last before breaking is beyond me.

Anyway, although the matter was resolved in another store I have passed full details onto Trading standards, BBC Watchdog along with several other places.

Taught me a lesson anyway and will never shop there again. I would prefer to shop elsewhere with confidence knowing that if I have a problem I take it back to were I bought it from.

    Thanks for your posts!
  • I bought an external dvd rw 2 months ago at PC world in Medway. After using it 4 times it stopped working. They had no quibbles with taking it back and refunding me when I showed them my receipt. I needed another that evening, so I bought one in there straight after I was refunded. I ended up with a better replacement at £10 less. I couldn't get the same one or equivalent for less online. I think it all depends on what it is you wish to take back to these stores. Also these things depend on the manager I'm sure. The guy at customer services was a very nice chap.

    I've been Money Tipped!
The washing machine I bought from Currys a week or so ago had a massive dent in it under the polastyrine lid that fits on the top when its new. So no amount of checking it over in the store would have showed this dent, unless you completely unwrapped it.

My husband took a photo and went back to the store to show them. He was told to ring the number on the reciept, they would arrange to collect it and bring another.

When we did call the girl said as we bought it home ourselves it was not possible to have a replacement. We could have done it!!

I was really cross £350 spent on a bashed washing machine. All they would offer was a cheque for £50.

    Not impressed.

I totally understand the issue you have with dixons but i do think it is a little wrong to bundle the whole lot in together. currys are famous for tbeing the more laid back shop in the chain who still close early on christmas eve so they can go home early.
I feel fairly sure that you would not come on here and tell everyone to boycott sky tv because "The Sun" offended you.despite both being owned by murdoch (well majority anyway) i used to work for PC World and the campanues owned by DSGI really do have very little to do with each other.
Good luck getting your vac sorted though.,

recently bought a DAB radio from local Currys - worked for a few hours.
Took it back next day - money refunded after guy had plugged it in and confirmed it was indeed duff. (they had sold out so got another at another store later)
    No problems...... this time
We all evolve - get on with it
  • i too have had trouble returning faulty goods. i bought an hitachi 32 inch lcd tv which was reported faulty by their engineers. (tv 3 months old) they want to take the tv away (collecting friday) and say it could take up to 28 days. it needs a new screen and a new motherboard. what happened to 12 months warranty where we can return goods for refund or exchange. i feel that i have paid full price for reconditioned goods.
