Why only 28 days? Cos after 28 days its the Manufacturer that offers your Support and Repairs/Replacements. Were not that bad we do offer our own services like Instant replacement/Insurance which means if its not instant replacement if its not fixed by our Support company or Manufacturer within 4-6 weeks u get your money back via Gift Voucher.

With all due respect, you may well work there, but that's absolute rot. The contract of purchase is with the store and it's up to the store to deal with it. Most things would be expected to last more than 28 days and are therefore not of satisfactory quality. 28 days is probably a reasonable definition of 'acceptance' and so people probably couldn't claim an immediate refund, but that in no way absolves the store.

And "money back via gift voucher"? No, money back via money please!

What I do find is that 90% of our customers belive if they have brought something from a store if it breaks down they can just come running back for a new one.....Try doing that to your Car.....

    Well
    (a) a car is just as much covered by the sale of goods act but;
    (b) a car trader can claim that replacing/refunding a new car gives him a disproportionate loss, i.e. it might cost £200 to fix, but he loses £2000 if he has to try and resell a "lemon".

Currys cannot claim the same; a £100 vacuum cleaner can only lose, say, £20 if you have to try and resell it.

If I came into your Work place knocked on your front door and said can you fix my PC are you not gonna wonder !!!!!! ?

Well if I'd sold you one, I'd deal with the contract fairly under the Sale of Goods Act. If something you sell develops a fault, you have to provide a repair or a replacement without inconveniencing the purchaser. Clearly PC World may not actually repair the PCs in house, but they should accept them at the same place they were purchased from (having to take a day off work is probably 'inconveniencing the purchaser')

Someone earlier said a Staff replaced or refunded his Vacuum cleaner after 1-2 months.... you know that guy can most likely loose his job from doing that? Hes broken half a dozen Company rules and Regulations.

But abided by the Law, and would have a very reasonable case for Unfair Dismissal. Strange as though it may seem, it's the Law and not Curry's policies that people are concerned about here.

[I do of course not have the full facts here, but if a vacuum cleaner breaks after 1-2 months and hasn't been treated unusually badly, then a replacement seems completely reasonable to me].

The washing machine I bought from Currys a week or so ago had a massive dent in it under the polastyrine lid that fits on the top when its new. So no amount of checking it over in the store would have showed this dent, unless you completely unwrapped it.

My husband took a photo and went back to the store to show them. He was told to ring the number on the reciept, they would arrange to collect it and bring another.

When we did call the girl said as we bought it home ourselves it was not possible to have a replacement. We could have done it!!

I was really cross £350 spent on a bashed washing machine. All they would offer was a cheque for £50.

    Not impressed.

I was told about this when I was asking about a washing machine. I thought it would be cheaper to collect it from the shop. But the sales lady told me that if we got it home and it was damaged, then Curry's would not cover it as they might assume you did it when trying to get it in the house. But if they delivered it then all dents were covered. She had a point I guess.....
NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!
  • I'll not go into the nitty gritty but

I'll never set foot into a PC world, Currys or Dixons store as long as I live.

Yes, the sales staff are pleasant, mostly know what they are talking about, but as soon as something goes wrong, they dont wanna know!

My OH used to work for mastercare and they treat their employees appaulingly! I had soooo much trouble with a faulty laptop I was getting ill from the stress of it, they kept expecting me to keep going back to the store, yet I hadn't a car, so it cost me a fortune too! They refused to replace it, but this would have been easier as I was sending it there and back for a year! I had spent £1000 on something I couldn't even use!

I contacted watchdog about the whole situation but....

because many years ago, someone had mastercare on watchdog for something that wasn't true, now they can NEVER have them on there again, even though they are the worst company EVER! This is why you never see them on there, even though you'd think they should be on it all that time.

I think this is why they think they can get away with it... the bar stewards. I HATE them with a passion as they caused me so much stress I was ill from it, but there was nothing I could do.

Your posts are mainly garbage from someone who thinks they can quote the law well. However I'll focus on this one.
Disproportionate loss? I doubt it, surely you realised the low margins to be made on most electrical products under £100 nowadays? The proportational loss on a vacuum cleaner in percentage terms can't be far different to that of a car trader! If a retailer did offer such a relaxed view on exchanges, they would be unlikely to be in business 12 months later!

Hang on, my point was that a car IS covered by the Sale of Goods Act. The proportional loss must be measured as the proportion of the repair cost vs. the exchange cost. And I can't see why their profit margin has anything to do with this.

An additional point is that a repair "must not inconvenience the purchaser". In the case of a car, they will almost always give you a courtesy car, thus clearly not inconveniencing you. Whereas the poster above claims that you sometimes wait 4-6 weeks; which clearly does.

And I'm very happy to defend any of the other points made above.... (I have edited them to make them slightly clearer, but not changed the meaning at all)

  • I recently purchased a new LCD HD ready LG 37inch. Cost £1300. I paid £70 for professional instalation. I had the funniest day ever!

the tv got delivered, two men delivered the TV. put the tv in the middle of the front room. They then turned to me and said that they have only installed two tvs as they are American fridge freezer specialists.

I couldnt believe I had paid £70 for two muppets to install my television. Anyway cut a long story short 2 hours later they were still reading the manual on how to get the tv set up. I actually knew what to do but it was funny watching these people try there hardest.

As soon as they left I phoned currys and complained that I had paid £70 to get my tv installed by fridge specialist, the manager could see the funny point. I returned to the shop and they gave me the £70 back no problems.
