This is a great idea and it's nice to see children involved. It fits with doing the family tree and even if you are not into family history now, there will come a time when you or someone in the family gets the bug. At this point there is usually no-one left of the older generation to ask all those questions you want answers to. So you are right to get some answers now. By the time I started doing family history all my grandparents' generation were long dead; my father had also died and my mother was in the early stages of Alzheimers. Memories are important.

What are all the addresses/ towns have you lived at in your life. Do you have photos of the houses?

What were your occupations/jobs? What did your Mum and Dad do , and your grandparents?

When you were little, do you remember who the oldest person in the family was?.

Where did you go to school? Where did your parents go to school?

Do you remember any big occasions -Coronation, royal visit, new road or bridge or building being opened.?

What games did you play?. How was Christmas celebrated? Did you go to church?

    What transport did you use?

I'd better stop or the book will be well overloaded.
if i had known then what i know now

I have merged all the Memories threads together as there were quite a few and it seemed like a good idea to keep them all together :)

I used some fab A5 note pads I found in Papercahse, £2.25 each & half lined paper & half plain so suitable for adding photos, drawings etc. I made 4 up in one go & printed all the questions on sticky lables so I just stuck them into each book in order. On the first page I wrote a little peice about how it worked (called it a "circular gift as hopefully it would eventually be given back). I can post the questions & spiel if anyone is desperate.

My evil MiL actually paid me a compliment (well, there's a first time for everything) over hers & is avidly filling it in for our son:D She thinks thay are a fantasitc idea & wants me to make her another 2 for her other grandsons:D

    HTH & good luck;)

I'd love to see your questions and spiel, particularly as i think you said you were putting in a note from little one explaining it which is the same as I will be doing

    Thanks

Could someone give ideas of how to get started, do you make the books yourselves or are they shop bought

    I think you could :

    a) buy a simple nice notebook

    b) buy a simple notebook and decorate the cover yourselves, attach ribbons to the spine, and pretty papers

    c) Buy a small "memory book" and do all the decorating yourselves

    d) Buy a large (12x12) scrapbook and add pitcures, memories etc (NB - HUGE AMOUNT OF TIME AND A GOOD DEGREE OF ARTISTIC LICENSE NEEDED!!)

    e) buy a folder and put plastic wallets in it...

Any of these would be LOVELY!

Can I just suggest " what a lovely idea for up and cominG MOTHER'S DAY CELEBRATIONS" !!!! I'm going to do one !! My Dad's bday is in March too so guess what he's getting too!

This is the type of thing I have done for SCRAPBOOKS. This is some of my photos from Paris, mounted, stuck on pretty paper, added bits to it, my ticket for the eiffel tower and a bit of "journalling"...but this can be done for anything, you could put a picture of a member of the family and leave a space for memories.......if you wanted to do something more time consuming.

Apologies for the fact half is chopped off, I only have an A4 scanner, and the page is bigger than A4.

I've got a lovely brown suede notebook from Asda....but its far too big for one lot of memories, what do you think if i sectioned it and gave it to my dad for his bday (end of feb) and then asked him to pass it on to Mum for mothers day? or just do one each? I kind of like the idea of all memories being in one place.... thoughts please?

I like the idea of Dad passing it on to Mum, she can have a good read and it might inspire some of her answers too!

I did a joint one for my parents for Xmas, I just put all the questiions for dad on the right hand pages in blue & all the questions for mum on the left hand pages in pink & on the front page explained that it was Grandy & Grandads Memory Book with a little explaination about doing it for their grandson. It was fairly obvious when you looked at it though:o A lot of the questions where the same but some where different for each of them, there would be no point asking my dad what his favourite recipe is for example as he can only make tea (!), likewise I couldn't ask mum when she first used the internet as she can't turn a computer on! I just put the matching questions facing each other (so you would have 2 different memories recorded together of the same thing) & peared up the odd questions (hope that makes sense?)

    HTH;)
