Wow - a lot of people know the "Rules", not many seem up on a little courtesy though.

The biggest problem on the roads today is the shear amount of traffic - how many junctions are there that if everybody played by the rules i.e. the car at the give way has to give way to the traffic on the main road, the traffic on the side road wouldn't move all day. If everyone extended a little courtesy the road would run much smoother.

Going back to the OP, there are roads around with parked cars where there is nowhere to pull in for several hundred metres, again if the person with "right of way" never gives way, nothing in the other direction moves - this often results in the person with right of way getting stuck further down the road, where the traffic that has been queuing has blocked the road at a pinch point further down.

That said I agree with the OP, theres nothing worse than someone who forces there way through and are agressive about it. - Loved the tale of the bus!

I'm sure you're the member who always bangs on about taxi drivers.

Like when you said it annoys you when they just stop, even on double yellows, without realising they actually have the right to do so.

    Are you that member?

No I don't think I am that member.

Also that comment above was made nearly 2 years ago.

I take it you are a taxi driver or work for a taxi company...

There was one occasion when someone parked pulled out on to my side of the road, just after I'd turned into a side street with cars parked all along the other side of the road.

So, we're at an impasse. He's adamant that he has right of way and demands that I reverse. The only way I'll be able to give him space to get through is to reverse onto the main road. Not likely.

He starts to sound his horn trying to get me out of the way. All he has to do is reverse back into his parking space, I pass, he can continue on his way.

By this stage (and being 'encouraged' by a work colleague), I just shrugged my shoulders, turned the car off and climbed out and walked down the street, keeping one eye on this idiot.

After a few more seconds screaming obscenities he pulls in, I jump back in the car and am away. Lo and behold he does the same thing to the next poor sap who happens to cross onto 'his' road!

Might be an old thread but its still an active subject.

I have always looked on it that if you have to cross over the dividing line then if the other side of the road can pass without crossing it then they have the ROW & vice versa.

If both have to straddle the line then the first to the obstruction wins, after that someone has to be considerate and let someone go otherwise you end up with a heated debate.

Oh, if you have a nice car and do not want scratches etc, giving way is always the better option lol

Drive up in a strong position, ie wheels nearly on the white line, make it clear nobody is squeezing past the other way. I've lost wing mirrors because of people overtaking parked cars, wouldn't have happened if there was clearly no room.

on paper yes the person with the obstruction on their side has to give way, but at the same time if someone has been giving way for a while it's curtosy to let them through. We've all been there - sometimes if you go by ther book you'll be stuck there forever.

Case in point, was driving through rotherhite tunnel a few days ago.

    video of tunnel here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqTUEkju5j0

basically a very narrow single lane bi-directional tunnel where you have to pass about a foot away from oncoming cars. Car on my side broke down a few miles in front causing a gridlock. If we went by the rules

    1) not allowed to cross the solid line
    2) must give way because obstruction on our side

We'd be stuck in there forever.

Fortunately oncoming traffic had the decency to climb onto the pavement and allowed our side to pass.

You should try driving on blues in the same situation, you have right of way in the same way as you have stated, plus you have the "noise" on, I always thought they where just looking for a claim up, but now you mention it, I see the same thing happen in my own car. Personally, I just drive as normal, got a little crack on my front bumper that needs fixing anyway.

We were taught to "command the road", the theory being you position yourself on the road in such a way that it is obvious there is no room to squeeze by, therefore making it less likely that people will try to push through when they have no right of way.

Sorry..... I used to pull over for emergency services.... then I got a bus lane ticket .... now, any doubt I stop and if you want to get past you can go int he bus lane not me!

No intention of claim, every intention of not getting a PCN

Theres nothing wrong with crossing a solid white line in the circumstances you describe. It could have been doing up to 10MPH and you could have still went round it.
