Parked cars, right of way.....

This isn't a question of who's right or wrong.....
If your approaching an obstruction on your of the carriageway, the oncoming vehicles have right of way..... Simple.
What i'd like to know, is why so many people genuinely believe the opposite to be true?
I'm not talking about arrogant BMW drivers or boy-racers, we all hate them, so let's not go there today
Im talking about your average middle age man/woman....
This morning I came across a chap (mid to late 50's) who was waiting to pass a bin lorry. I'd literally just exited a mini island and had no intention of stopping for him as this would cause a back up of traffic onto the island, he then pulls sharply out into my path and starts gesturing/pointing at the road whilst mouthing off at me.... I'm 100% certain that he thought he had the right of way!!! :rotfl:
You have to laugh it off really, but it only reaffirms my opinion that a driving theory test every 10 years or so, should be mandatory.
Im thinking of Youtubing this guy, the look on his face is just classic :rotfl:
"I've been driving 30 years and never had an accident" blah blah blah
[/semi-rant]
How is it possible that this guy has been driving ALL these years and doesn't know something so fundamentally simple as right of way when passing an obstruction???
What are these people on?

I had a near-miss with a pensioner last week who was adamant that you give way to the left on a roundabout. I'm guessing he's one of those drivers who's never had a crash, but he's seen an awful lot in his rear-view mirror.0

You should try driving on blues in the same situation, you have right of way in the same way as you have stated, plus you have the "noise" on, I always thought they where just looking for a claim up, but now you mention it, I see the same thing happen in my own car. Personally, I just drive as normal, got a little crack on my front bumper that needs fixing anyway.
We were taught to "command the road", the theory being you position yourself on the road in such a way that it is obvious there is no room to squeeze by, therefore making it less likely that people will try to push through when they have no right of way.0 -
I got 3/4 of the way down a residential road where cars parked on both sides means there's only enough space for 1 car, a middle-aged woman then entered the road and instead of stopping at the end for 20 seconds to allow me to go past she started to drive down the road! She then started gesturing that I should reverse to let her go :doh:I doubt there are any rules about it, but common sense seemed to be lost.0

I think your situation is a little different Lil_Me.0

It's the Me! Me! Me! generation. I find people of my age group (40's) to be shockingly arrogant at times. Women are far worse, they've been put on a pedestal for too long and "expect" doors to be held open and things done for them.
Whilst we're on the subject of parked cars, one thing that annoys me is people who don't give way when you're already committed. Near where I live there is a road with a row of terraced houses. They have a long marked bay (15 cars long maybe) to park outside their house. So when you approach with the bay on your side you give way. When it's clear you go. At the other end if a car comes around the corner 70% of people will brake and allow you to complete the manoeuvre. The other 30% plough on blindly regardless. Luckily the odd time there is a small space for you to tuck into. The 30% who are the morons? Men and women in their 40's.The man without a signature.0 -
"Right of Way" is a very bad expression. The graveyards of England are full of people who had the "Right of Way". In certain circumstances, you might have priority if it is safe."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools"

I had a similar situ while driving a bus. Matey wouldn't wait so we end up stale mated. He gets out comes to my cab window and says; ''You will have to reverse!" I says; "Sorry, no can do... illegal".
He says; "well I ain't reversing!" I says (by now i've got my copy of the Daily Sport out): "I havn't asked you to and we can sit here all day BUT, i'm getting paid... are you?" After a few mins of me flicking through may paper, he jumps back into his car a floors it into reverse... gets as far as the wide bit and hits a parked van! I puts me paper away and continues down the road waving a cheery 'thank you' to matey as i went past. How I kept a straight face I do not know... but I did think to myself "there is a God!"PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -
the oblivious school run parents gets my BP UP outside daughters school is a narrow road with a 40 degree bend in it, cars a parked to oneside on the road, then parents decide to double park blocking the road off to drop their child off, its also a bus rout so if someone blocks the road for 2 mins while they drop off search bag for tuck money then get bags out of boot give child a hug for the morning, holds up the bus's right of way causing a massive cue down the road, as the bus driver has to wait for 2 or 3 cars to shift off, funny thing is that at the rear gates of the school there is plenty of space to drop a child off and is quicker access to all routes out of the village. picking up is worse, as every tom dic and harry tries to jump out the school exit junction into oncoming cars vans and busses, when one gets caught short by a oncoming vehicle from the road that has parked cars to the onside and to the right theres a line of school busses so when their try to pull out in that situation the cars behind the person pulling out moves forward and so does the rest waiting to come up to the junction the all have to reverse back to allow the car back into the junction to allow the car on the left right of way to clear the road so the rest can move from the right. absolut nightmare so i stopped picking and dropping kids at front and park out the rear, and be home before other parents who left before me in my street that drops out the front of school.
theres a particularly nasty spot near my town center, too there a road that leads down into it but cars parked on oneside outside their homes and a great big stone wall the other, if theres no gap inbetween cars for someone moving up the road to pull into they should wait at the bottom, but i find, mostly women and men aged 45+ will see you coming down but still move out onto the wrong side of the road and proceed to cause a problem even if the have less space to reverse back as they should will almost touch bumpers and gesture you to reverse 600 yards back even when theres four or five cars behind you and no one behind them, i had one crazy woman try to force me back a few years ago, she had a massive go at me there were about six cars waiting behind me and two behind her, i told her it was my right of way as my side of the road was clear untill she pulled out into my path, she argued and agrued that she had a right of way, she even turned off her car and sat there, it took four guys and three women to explain to her she was in the wrong, it was our right of way as we had committed and proceeded down a clear road she wasnt even on that road when i had committed to it she came round the courner seen us coming down half way up but still pulled out and proceeded towards me.
and i'll never forget the time, i was coming the right way round a oneway system, and faced with a woman in a street KA coming towards me i pointed to the NO ENTRY sign she stopped wond her windows down and asked "what do you mean" i replied "love its a one way system" she said "too right it is turn around you idiot your going the wrong way down it" i said " sorry love but the big red signs at the end of the street with a white bar in it stipulates NO ENTRY and have a look at the parked cars and see wich way their faceing YOUR GOING THE WRONG WAY DOWN IT" she said "oh all the years ive been driving i never knew what those signs were for" i said "look on the lampost to your left love and theres a blue sign and white arrow with ONE WAY pointing you back the way you came".0
