I watched with my son in amazement tuesday night as we were leaving the local supermarket, the road bends and curves and splits into two at the roundabout, an estate car infront of me for some bizzare reason takes the right hand lane, i'm in the left and then takes the first left exit whilst mounting the kerb.

ds and me just looked at each other and decided to hang back a bit... whist laughing at the pure sillness of wanting to be first and in front of a woman i guess

I just really, really wish people would learn how to turn right off a roundabout.

The amount of people who shake their fists at me when I want to turn left or go straight ahead is ridiculous.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

This isn't a question of who's right or wrong.....
If your approaching an obstruction on your of the carriageway, the oncoming vehicles have right of way..... Simple.

What i'd like to know, is why so many people genuinely believe the opposite to be true?

I'm not talking about arrogant BMW drivers or boy-racers, we all hate them, so let's not go there today :p

Im talking about your average middle age man/woman....

This morning I came across a chap (mid to late 50's) who was waiting to pass a bin lorry. I'd literally just exited a mini island and had no intention of stopping for him as this would cause a back up of traffic onto the island, he then pulls sharply out into my path and starts gesturing/pointing at the road whilst mouthing off at me.... I'm 100% certain that he thought he had the right of way!!! :rotfl:

You have to laugh it off really, but it only reaffirms my opinion that a driving theory test every 10 years or so, should be mandatory.

Im thinking of Youtubing this guy, the look on his face is just classic :rotfl:

"I've been driving 30 years and never had an accident" blah blah blah

    [/semi-rant]

How is it possible that this guy has been driving ALL these years and doesn't know something so fundamentally simple as right of way when passing an obstruction???

    What are these people on?
please do could do with a laugh, post link back when youve done it please strider.

There was a time once I was driving down a country road when a woman comes speeding round a bend in the opposite direction. when she saw me she slammed on her brakes to slow down while I wound my window down and called out 'MAD COW!' to which she replied 'WA**KER!' Next day on the news I heard 'Woman hurt in car crash with stampeeding friesian which had escaped from it's field. I thought to myself; "I did warn her"...

I have always been under the impression that the driver who enters the hazard fist, has the right of way. It is then treated as a single track road.

About as different as verybigchris and his roundabout, what's your point?

In so much as you are talking about a long road, the OP appears to be talking about a car parked on one side of the road, thus one car has to go onto the oncoming traffics lane.

In your position you are both in the middle of the road.

Not interested in commenting on verybigchris and his roundabout, though he is putting forward a new scenario, not likening his to striders post directly.

If you can't see the difference between two scenarios then you need to be less cocky and learn to read things a bit better.

I had a near-miss with a pensioner last week who was adamant that you give way to the left on a roundabout. I'm guessing he's one of those drivers who's never had a crash, but he's seen an awful lot in his rear-view mirror.

During the snow this past winter. I was indicating right to turn into a side road, from the main road. A young driver approached the "T" junction, didn't stop and continued out into the main road, with no attempt at slowing down. Bearing in mind there was snow on the ground, he skidded and mounted the kerb on the other side of the road. I stopped and got out to make sure he was okay. He then had a go at ME, saying HE had the right of way, because I was indicating right, to turn into the junction.

The highway code covers this situation differently!
give way to oncoming vehicles before passing parked vehicles or other obstructions on your side of the road

I got 3/4 of the way down a residential road where cars parked on both sides means there's only enough space for 1 car, a middle-aged woman then entered the road and instead of stopping at the end for 20 seconds to allow me to go past she started to drive down the road! She then started gesturing that I should reverse to let her go :doh:I doubt there are any rules about it, but common sense seemed to be lost.

This is the very scenario I have just referred to. Those who enter the hazard first, has the right of way. The driver who is closest to a passing space, has to reverse back to allow the other to pass.

There are two scenarios here flyboy, the one that Lil_Me has introduced with a long narrow road with both vehicles on the middle of the road, in which case I would treat it exactly as you suggest.

But the actual situation that strider was talking about which is when two cars are driving down the road, and a parked car forces one driver to go into the oncoming lane, in essence performing an overtaking manouevere, the issue strider has is that people seem unable to differentiate between a car overtaking a moving or static obstacle.

I a car was overtaking a car on a country road then they wouldn't assume they had right of way when on the wrong side of the road in the face of oncoming traffic, however when they overtake a stationary car they seem to assume that they now have right of way, the only difference is the speed of the object being overtaken.
