I asked about redesignating in branch tomorrow, the woman who told me they were closed today said I could go to the branch and use their phone free!

    I used the savings number - 08457 263646 iirc.

I was told it would take up to four working days to show the new interest rate on on-line banking, but that interest at the higher rate would be effective from today.

However I was also told that the interest-to-date will not be added before the redesignation (because it's the same account, just being redesignated, not transferred) but would be added in April as it would have been anyway.

The bloke I spoke to *seemed* quite clued-up - it took 28 minutes on the phone but that includes time going through security before being put through to the redesignation team, and then three of us redesignating ISAs before the end of the call (including a 16-year-old who just opened his first ISA on-line earlier this week - so his bit took about as long as the other two put together).

There does seem to be several different versions of what will happen.

Where is the Halifax rep that is supposed to be on here? How do we get him/her to tell us the correct information?

Can I go for this even though I have already done my full subscription elsewhere? I want to transfer in from an A&L account which is about to go to almost zero interest...

    Thanks

    edited to add:
This is in the terms and conditions:
"I have not subscribed and will not subscribe to another cash ISA in the same tax year that I subscribe to this cash ISA"

So that looks like you cannot open this and fund it purely from a transfer...

You need to say you have not subscribed this year, then it will open the new ISA. DO NOT FUND IT IMMEDIATELY.

Print off a transfer form and send it in or take it to a branch. Once your funds arrive you can deposit any remaining allowance. Alternatively, if you have money available you could top up your existing ISA before transferring it.

Or you can do it all in a branch or by phone.

The truth probably is that he/she doesn't have the answers him/herself.

It would seem the process is a bit hit-and-miss at the moment. What will it be like when the rush starts from tomorrow, I wonder?

Rang up the number on the website for new applications, done there and then, so the muppet I spoke to earlier was telling big fat porkies! Said it would take a few days to update my account online, yay 3.2%!

    Hi all,

I currently have no ISA registered but am looking to open one. If I open one now and fill it with the £5100 immediately, will I then have to wait a year before I can put another £5100 in it? I ask as I am aware of people posting about the April 1st deadline.. what does this refer to?

You can put in £5100 now, then an additional £5340* on or after 6th April.

    * = The limit is increasing next tax year
