I remember my sister having an issue the other week in a Post Office. Her fella is in the armed forces, and was sending out a parcel to him for valentines. All neatly wrapped and taken along in plenty of time.

The parcel was rejected as it was 20g overweight. In the grand scheme of things, 20g is barely noticeable, and although my sister offered to pay extra for it to go, it was flat out refused and she had to take it away and repack.

I know they have to follow their rules, but I think a tiny bit of discretion in this case would've been nice.

    so what do you suggest?
they let it go and it gets charged at the mail centre?
then we get a complaint from the recipient that they are being charged,it got sent via a post office, yada yada

As you'll see, I suggested a bit of discretion in this. She also offered to pay the extra to have it sent, which was declined. For 20g, it's pretty petty in fairness.

    there are limits in place
its a one size fits all systme
would you prefer it that it hits the mail centre
gets rejected by the machines and returned to you

    its not petty
    20g on one packet.okay
20g on 1000000 packets? that adds up to extra trucks, handling etc

do folks want a public service mail service or profit making?
cant have it both ways and the ship has sailed on a public service

Are you the one man royal mail crusade? You seem to just be rejecting any form of criticism thats aimed at Royal Mail. I appreciate you've worked for them and obviously enjoyed it, but everyone has their flaws.

As for the postal positions available at the time, it was one available. she was serving on her own, which was ridiculous in the first place, given that I was told when i joined the queue by the man in front she'd been on the phone discussing a problem with one customers mail for about 20 minutes before I'd got there. The rest of the queue just stood there waiting, with the bloke at the front twiddling his thumbs whilst she tried to sort it.
  • Ok so we are seeing it a bit clearer. She was the only one serving, so obviously she is gonna be pretty peeved off that she has to do 6 parcels at closing time. Alot of Post Offices are short staffed at the moment, maybe someone had gone sick, we dont know. She was obviously feeling the pressure of being on the phone with a customer, and seeing the queue growing while being the only one serving. Or maybe she had had a rude customer a few transactions back, could be a multitude of reasons.

I know that if we have someone that has alot of parcels last minute, we get pretty annoyed about it, but we dont say it directly to the customer...

The guy at the front of the queue, im presuming was a meeter/greeter or the Financial Specialist. These people are not usually trained on the Horizon system so cannot be used to help out when short.

BFPO parcels are limited to 2kg and if it goes over that limit, we cannot physically put it through. If it was a gram or 2 then yes I would probably put it through as 2kg and be done with it, but if it is over (they do get checked by RM) we can get penalised for putting it through, and the customer wouldnt be happy if it didnt get to its destination because of it.

why is following a set procedure a flaw?
why not pop into Tesco and try and get a 10% discount,or tell them you want a but extra thrown in
    it doesnt work that way
I'll criticise RM all day long(although in this case it was Post office counters) when its applicable
however as i said the days of a public service mail carrier are gone.
so you get market forces in place.
the limits are in place for that mail service, period.
Im curious where you have discerned from my posts that I 'obviously enjoyed it'?

Hi, no, sorry I don't think I explained that very well.

Basically I arrived and there was a queue of about 8 people. There was one woman serving, and there was a customer who was at the front of the line, who had been stood at the till bit for about 20 minutes before I got there apparently. The lady serving had his parcel behind the counter, and was on the phone talking to someone, constantly checking the parcel, so the customer obviously had a problem sending it or something.

Sorry, I didnt explain that very well.
