Then why are they open that late? That's ridiculous, a store is open until that time, thats the time it shuts. Whether I go in there at 9am or 5.25pm, they serve me, thats their job. If i'd ran in at 5.30 with my parcels and demanded she serve me as she was getting ready to leave, i'd fully understand her turning me away or complaining. But i went in there 10 minutes before closing, i was polite, and all she did was be consistently rude towards me for the 7 minutes it took to process my items.

sorry, you have quoted that i wouldnt go in that late.
then ask me why they are open that late?
its moot because i wouldnt go in that that.
    get it?
    'they' being who?
is the person who serves you in a shop the person who decides company policy?
I spent many years working as a chef.say the restaurant closed at 10pm. if a customer came in at 10 for a 5 course meal. im sure thats fine as they came in at 10?

I agree OP, you did get there before it closed and how can you tell how long the person infront will take.
I dont think she was being terribly rude, but there probably should be someone stopping people coming in, and then everyone that is in gets served

Honestly, i'm not normally one to get so offended, but it's not translating across here how rude she was over the matter.

I worked in a supermarket for 3 years, when the store was closing they announced it via the tannoy, and all the customers in the store were told to take their items to the trolley to pay. There'd be numerous occasions where i'd still be serving past 4pm, we never turned people away at 4pm on the dot. If they were in the store, buying our products, we completed the transaction.

What sort of a message does it send out to customers if you're turning them away because 'you don't get paid extra for it'.

what sort of message is it when a company expects staff to work for free for a (relatively) low wage?

Are you seriously comparing paying postage for 6 parcels (5-10 minutes) to the process of preparing a 3 course meal?

It doesn't even make sense for a start, restaurants have a time that they stop serving meals, but remain open to a certain time. This shop didnt have a sign saying 'we stop taking orders at 5.20 so we can leave at 5.30' they have a sign saying 'Open till 5.30' I got there and started queuing at 5.20.

she would finish serving 5 minutes later. how many in retail just walk away when they serve the last customer?
I have to that I have not seen this (not to say it doesnt happen). I have been at a check out on several occasions where someone is waiting to take over someone who is due to come off shift, they always finish put the shopping through before they go. I personnally used to work in a call centre when i was younger and if a call came through 5 mins before the end of your shift you still had to to take it, regardless of how long the call would take.

  • Again being a bit harsh on the OP the point is she was in there before closing forget everything else as it don't matter.

They should lock the door at 5:30 like every other store I know off and serve the customers remaining.

There must be something wrong with the employees employment if she has to go dead on 5:30 and that is between her and the post office not there customers.

well to use my RM experience
    you will never win
try shutting the door on a Saturday with people still streaming in heading for the door
Ive seen me still serving an hour after closing with people still arriving
  • If there was enough of a queue that you weren't going to get served before 5:30 then she should have told you when you came in.

Make a complaint if she was rude and her service was bad. If no-one ever complains it'll never improve.

    I think she was rude.

She shouldn't have said anything like that to you, she should have smiled sweetly, taken your parcels, bid you good day, then had a moan at her employers!
