  • Last night the wife and I decided to check out our new Tesco Extra store in Carmarthen. Anyhow we bought a few things and saw a deal on Carlsberg, 3 x 18 Pack (440ml cans) for £24. Was the best we'd seen so purchased. Anyhow on leaving the car park I spotted that we'd been overcharged for them and that they were coming up on our receipt as 2 for £16 so we paid £26.97 for the 3. As it was "only £3" my wife said lets go but being a true MSE I said it was worth venturing inside which we did. Anyhow the customer service guy went to find the price and indeed we'd been overcharged going by the price on the sign which was out of date. We were given a full refund of £26.97 and were allowed to keep the 54 cans of beer! Result. The best thing is that if anyone lives in/near Carmarthen, they can't seem to remove the sign with the out of date offer on as they don't have a cherry picker to do it at the moment........I'm not greedy enough to go back but nice early xmas present.
    Consider anything only don't cry!
  • Just came back from the local Tesco after our 1st run - NOTHING!

In the recent past, when I've been looking for the bargains I frequently found many mispriced items - always went for the lower price & took no notice of the SEL as it was frequently wrong. (Really wished I had read these forums earlier!)

The local store unbelievably now all the meat prices were perfect, :A we just found one item underpriced, none over. The sole overpriced mispriced item we saw was Smoked Haddock - which I picked up 8.3? kg & priced up 50-60p more expensive per kilo.

Frozen food - 4 chunky breaded cod fillets @ £2.99 each with a yellow sticker 2 for £5 which expired yesterday. Picked up 4 as we always buy these. Put the Smoked haddock back as didn't want to appear too greedy & felt more comfortable getting a refund on these.

Got to till - Yea, you've guessed it - they scanned at 2 for a fiver.

All DVD's no stickers. Guess I'm rubbish at this  BUT I really think they must have had someone hit them big as I've never seen the store before with all prices of all meat products identical. Maybe a new manager??

Can someone tell me when you think is the best time to catch the bargains? Are there better days of the week? When do most of the offers end?

If you go around the store you will clearly see that different departments has offers that end at different times of the week, recently we had a load of offers that run out on the 14th on Nov, which brought about loads of misprices. When several departments have changes at the same time there seems to be one wholly ++++ up!
So my advise would be when doing normal shop check a number of yel SEL on different areas, like Booze, Washing, Meats, Electrical, Books, Christmas, Frozen etc etc. If these tally in a number of areas i.e 3 areas run out on say the 22nd Nov, coincide your shop for the following day, Voila. Misprice heaven.
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.

A manager was then drafted in and we walked to the offending display, he stated that it was a human error as the wrong product had been placed on the wrong shelf and that the code on the SEL did not match that product code and at this point he started moving thing around!!

Posted this before but.... anytime you hear them describe it as an error and not a misprice just reply "so are you saying overcharges are deliberate and not errors?"

All overcharges are "human errors" who is it that puts SELs and products on the shelves?

    Give it time Dude.

You have my admiration as a newbie because you've gone out and tried to get some R&R action - walking the walk - puts the XBOX newbie whinging Dudes to shame.

If you browse Departments you will get a feel when offers are going to end - for instance a lot of booze offers end on 24 November - so an early Saturday morning trip might be in order.

If you want something specific simply make a note of the date the offer ends - then go in a day later.

DVDs - you can almost guarantee that many stores will leave old promotional material out - next Monday go hunting for old Pirates 2 SELs.

Games - Friday is SEL update day - try to get a feel for the prices of titles and then look for any obvious changes.

DVDs generally - scan the aisle and see if the stickered price matches the SEL - if not you may be in.

CDs - I tend to browse the chart releases and look for anything that stands out - if you see a CD with a SEL of £8.97 at number 16 in the charts when everything else is £9.97 then it's worth investigating.

    Good luck to you,

  • I was in my local Tesco last weekend and noticed the Garlic stonebread was bogof.
The sign said 'Tesco Italiano Stonebaked Pizza Bread' and there was a shelf of Garlic (£1.29) and Cheese & Garlic (£1.69).
Not fond of the cheesy ones, so chucked the 2 garlic breads in the trolly.
End of the aisle was another sign, but it only said bogof on the cheesy ones.
Went back and took a picture with cameraphone of the offending sign to show CS.

Went through till and sure enough I was charged for both garlic breads.
Wandered over to CS and told her and she then went over to the aisle, whilst I waited. She came back and said there was no sign at all where I bought mine from.

I produced the pictures and she said that I could've taken that in another shop and that it's only cheese & garlic on sale.
Not happy at all, especially as I'm pretty much accused of lying despite my proof.

Asst manager came down and I explained the problem. She was very helpful, but couldn't understand why I had taken pictures of the sign (that was now not to be seen).

They refunded me and I kept the GB. They said they'd check the cameras and I reckon they'll see somebody remove the offending sign!

Was I in the right to do this?

    (sorry for the long post!)

can I offer some good advise on top of this....
there is a site called 'fixtureferrets' and they give you in date order nearly all the up to date offers. So look at it and decide when a certain section finishes, like beer on the 28th November-do your shopping with this knowledge on the 29th.And obviously like the other user said,if several departments have offers finishing, then all the better. The site mentioned give you free use on all the inexpensive offers, you can upgrade to the more expensive items for a small yearly fee of I think £5.00....(but find one mispriced item and it pays for itself);)
I am in no way connected to the site,or earn any money for mentioning it,by all means MODS remove this info if it causes concern,thankyou...
  • I popped into Tesco today to pick up a couple of hot water bottles for the kids and because they were part of the 3 for 2 offer I looked for something else to go with them when I spotted the old favourite - new driver kit.

Kit was still in the black box marked £7.94 and scanned as £7.97 so I thought great - get R+R and the water bottles are then equivalent to buy one get one free. I didn't count on the CSA being a witch and coming up with her own reasoning behind the overcharge.

She said the price on the shelf is the price you should pay so I asked her why have a more prominent price on the box they are in? She then said well if there are two prices we can charge you either of them and you happen to have been charged the higher one - if you like I will refund the 3p difference.

I walked away and decided to ring HO and the guy I spoke to there told me the overpice policy relates to a difference between the shelf edge label and the price you are charged - it does not cover promotional boxes.

I couldn't very well say that it did last time I tried it but I can't believe they won't honour this now.

I don't want to raise my profile as I've done quite a few R+Rs over the last couple of weeks and I don't think its worth it over £8.
If I do push it will they want all my details as at the moment i'm thinking return the kit for a refund (I didn't want it anyway) and just get them on something different next time.

Charge you two prices - what a stupid comment to make!!! Contact trading standards. It's misleading advertising and amounts to breaking the law.

Thought about it but its not worth making yourself known for a few quid.
Or can you contact TS anonymously?

Forgot to mention before that nearly every other box on this display (including the ones that match the SEL) has the price in the bottom right corner crossed out with black marker pen. CSA could not explain to me why this was!
