  • I really wish I'd read these threads months ago. Up till now I've done most of my shopping in Tesco.
Usually I look for mark downs & am pleased when I find stock marked down especially finding meat with lower price tags. I realise now I've been shopping completely wrongly. I'm going to start looking for some decent long dated meat with higher than average price tags.
It'll be a whole new world.
First shop - doing it your way today.

Make sure you have read the 1st page of this thread, keep calm, polite, stand your ground if you are overcharged. Good Luck

i did choccy's an the organic veg but saw some lamb chops price on pack 12xx per kile but shelf maked 11xx per kilo

they are expencive any way an im on a budget dont really wanna purchase stuff i cud get cheaper at full price else where

    did that make sence...lol
Which came first the chicken or the egg....suppose it depends on which one is mispriced...i know not funny :o
  • Just wondering, if I brought something that had an SEL of e.g. 16.97, but had a sticky label of 16.94, and it scanned through at 16.94, could I then complain saying "it was cheaper than what the actual sel said", so therefore things don't add up...

Or should I just be happy that it went through cheaper than it says on the sel, but same as on the sticker on it...?

It does not work with undercharges it is only on over charges. Just be glad you paid less!

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
I have made my mind up, i have read and read, and im going this week for my first attempt.
I think im going to take the easy option with stickered items like books etc but would like some toys for the "3 littles" for xmas.
Would also like the roasting beef people are talking about.

Just want to confirm one thing, if the SEL has a lower price but has expired and it scans higher, is this an R & R or will they say the SEL is out of date?

Hope i get something its a 30 mile round trip!!

it is definately an overprice if it scans at a higher price. if they offer you the difference or say its out of date sel then stand your ground but be polite and respectful

Most of the time you wont have a problem with it being an out of date SEL, some CS staff will try it on, saying its out of date so you paid the correct price but just stand your ground, say something like "well shouldnt that have been taken down?" or "how am I supposed to know that?"

Try not to be too arguementative but also dont let them intimidate you into going away empty handed.
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

Hi all I would have posted this earlier but have been waiting to see what the big T was up to so here goes:

Last week spotted a pile of Venturer 15" LCD TV & 15" LCD TV + DVD units on promotion on an end unit on the top shelf there was a pile of LCD TV + DVD units there was a single SEL attached to this particular shelf of £148 so I purchased one.

It was only after I checked my receipt that I realised that I had been charged £180 so went to CS and was then directed to the electrical department where I pointed the overcharge out to a grunt, A manager was then drafted in and we walked to the offending display, he stated that it was a human error as the wrong product had been placed on the wrong shelf and that the code on the SEL did not match that product code and at this point he started moving thing around!

Obviously I informed him that by law all signage had to be unambiguous and in no way should it mislead the customer as this was actually an offence!
He agreed that it was a mistake and was misleading but he was not prepared to do anything about it, I informed him that I would be contacting HQ as was not happy with his response and left with the item!

HQ after a very long dissuasion with some pleb I was told that it (and I quote) "IS DOWN TO THE CUSTOMER TO CHECK THE BARCODE ON THE PRODUCT SO THAT IT TALLIES WITH THE BARCODE ON THE PRICE TICKET DISPLAYED"

How I laughed I did ask if it stated this anywhere in store or was there any literature available that he could send me stating this ridicules rule his answer was "NO COMMENT"

Anyway asked for a superior and got a lovely lady who listened and said she would look into it and call me back within a few day's, sure enough a few day's later I received a call but from a different person they apologised for the problem and stated that they did not consider this an overcharge and as it was down to human error they where not prepared to do anything about it BUT in compensation for the breakdown in communication (?) they would send me £50 credit, I realized this was as good as it was going to get and took there offer!

Received the £50 credit today lovely and will use it WISELY as for the TV + DVD I will simply take in back and get a refund!

P.S Can you still buy CAPS i.e. for a CAP GUN!
  • So what if it's a human error? Think about any overcharge that happens and how it comes about. Who's fault is it? Tesco could argue that it's any number of reasons - but what's at the root of any of those reasons? Human error...

To envisage this imagine the outcome - the overcharge happens because you pay more than has been advertised. There a chain of events that must take place from getting the correct pricing information from the central databases onto the shelve SEL and ensuring this matches up with the price charged at the till. You've got to make sure that all goods are displayed in their correct places and any packaging prices are taken into consideration. An error in any of these steps will result in incorrect information being passed along the chain. Seems pretty basic when you think about it but the simple fact is that it will generally be human error in one of these steps that results in a misprice.

Asking the consumer to check the barcode is simply trying to pass the responsibility onto them and is simply unacceptable, hence the consumer protection act's guidelines on ambiguous and misrepresentative pricing. It is Tesco's job to ensure that their SEL's and offers match up with the price charged.

As far as I am concerned human error is not a valid excuse - it's a concession that a mistake has been made, and bearing in mind that the bulk of misprices are down to human error it really is an admission that you should be entitled to a refund & retain under their own policy.
