Since when did private companies escape the FOI Act?

It's my understanding that if any company holds information about you, public or private, you are entitled to read it.
You're thinking of the Data Protection Act.

BTW, I posted that a year ago.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I am indeed. I stand corrected. :doh:I knew there was a way of finding out the information they were after (and fully intent to do so next time they call! ) and you confused me. So under the Data Protection Act the people cold calling from 01111 (and any others for that matter) are legally oblidged to tell you where they have got your information from then?

You may have posted that a year ago, but my phone calls started yesterday! :)

I think it only applies to calls made from or on behalf of UK-based companies.

Of course, you'd have to milk the caller for their information before you'd have a chance of requiring disclosure. IIRC, there's a £10 fee to pay up front too.

  • I worked for these guys and trust me, just another way of ripping people.

They get customer information of databases from loan and cc companies.

IF you have taken out anything to do with credit. They will have your details :P

    They suck
