Oh I like this! I went through a phase of reading some stories on a couple of 419er websites, I love the ones where the baiters also get the bad guys to take silly photos of themselves too!

I would love to try doing one myself but im not very teckie and I would worry that these scammers would have some attachements on their emails which would damage my comupter or steel all my passwords!

Can I recommend the very funny book Delete This At Your Peril:-

This book detailing Neil Forsyth's alter-ego Bob 'Godzilla' Servant's hilarious exchanges with various internet spammers will not fail to amuse even the most discerning reader. Firstly, Forsyth's description of his creation's life and career in Broughty Ferry (near Dundee) are spot on and the fact that he was once one of the foremost cheeseburger vendors and window cleaners in the area (until the gypsies allegedly stole his ladders...) are very funny indeed.

    And then what happened...?

He is clearly locked in solitary confinement at JFK airport and, as he has no contact with anyone, I guess they are not bringing him any food or water.

So, maybe he is dead, or the internet-connected computer (with a Benin IP address) they generously provided to him in solitary confinement has ceased to work?

The best one I read was where the baiter convinced the 419er to send photos of himself being tattoed...

I think the truly scary thing about these types of email is that they must be profitable otherwise the scammers wouldnt do them.

How many people fall for this daily?

While i sympathise with people taken in by these scammers, a meaner part of me cant help but think there are plenty more potential Darwin award winners out there!

I really do not know how may people fall for this but, in history, they have sold the Eiffel Tower and Buckingham Palace!

Lots of people lose lots of money to these scam, as this BBC report shows:-

Last year, more than 3,000 people reported being scammed but police believe many more are too embarrassed to admit they fell for them.

Mass marketing scams makes up a quarter of all reported fraud but accounts for 90% of losses, with the average victim who reports a fraud losing £27,000.

Personally, I would be very wary about opening any e-mail attachments from someone I do not know. Very few of the scammers use attachments anyway, unless they want to send you a copy of a fake passport etc.

If I do open any attachments I do so inside a sandbox.

    Dear Sir

My apologies, but I fear you have arrived at JFK. I am now living in Washington DC. Let me know how much the jorney from JFK to Washington will cost you and I will reimburse your expenses.

Let me know if you want me to give you the expenses to you when you arrive at my house, or if you want me to send the money to your office in Benin. Once I have your answer I will send the 55$ tag fee as well.
