I went to my local shops earlier and saw a poster for a clairvoyant evening. Out of interest, I went to look where it was being held cos the view that 'if you hold one, even though I wouldn't come to it, and no-one is forcing me to, I would never go back to your place'' isn't one I'd encountered prior to this thread. Anyway, the one I saw was going to take place in a community centre. I should imagine it hosts a whole load of other events, from OAP lunches, to mums and tots groups, linedancing classes. Heaps, and heaps of people to offend, if they are so inclined, so I would guess that most people don't think that way.

The one we organised was in a hotel in one of the conference rooms ;)

Not really the same thing though is it? If you felt somebody or some organisation was exploiting people then you would boycott them/it. Some of the posters clearly have a strong negative reaction to the idea of a clairvoyants evening and it might be worth the OP from doing a quick poll of her customers in case they also have these feelings.

If it's old and creaky why not have a ghost story evening?

ps why is this in the relationships etc thread? Shouldn't it be in businesses or something?

No I wouldn't boycott it I'd mind my own business and go to an event I liked. If people pay to go it's because they like it, and many people do.

  • Apologies to anyone that thinks I may be strident in my criticisms - it was not intended. I just get so wound up by the dismissal of everything the human race has done over millennia to improve the lives of us all. Combine this with the labelling of small children as 'seers' and the like and I just can't help feeling both annoyed and saddened.

Also, to use the term empirical evidence is sadly misleading at best and a downright lie at worst. Not only is there no evidence at all but empirical...understand the term before you bandy it about in your attempts to sound like it is supported by anything other than hearsay and subjective stories.

As for being on topic - I thought I had been. The most popular and busy establishments I have worked and in have all offered either good value food or excellent quality. The other key point is customer service. I am sure many would agree with me on that point. How many rants have we all read here with poor customer service being the key complaint. That isn't to suggest the OP doesn't already know this - more that it is worth re-iterating. It doesn't sound like she has any issues in her business and is looking to just expand her customer base. In the current climate I wish her the very best and also congratulations for maintaining a nice sounding business in the harsh conditions all businesses, big and small, currently face.

Also, whilst the OPs story is both heartwarming and seems to show there might be something in it, I would suggest that without the 'reading' and then thinking about it, in conjunction with the personal upheavels described, that the path may not have been taken to move etc. Not a bad thing though - if only all these experiences could have such a positive outcome!

Best of luck and happiness to you and your family.

  • crystaltips, I don't think anyone is calling small children seers! Why does it annoy you that some people believe in something you don't? Just because there is no evidence of something, doesn't mean it's not true, and does not give you the right to critisize someone else's belief's!!! After all, there was a time where the world was believed to be flat, but in time was proved otherwise, there was a time when we did not think we could walk on the mood, but in time was proved otherwise, so where there is no proof of spirit, or medium's, there is also no proof that this is not true.

I don't think you have been on topic, Julie was asking for ideas for her planned clairvoyant night, negative comments don't really help.

You clearly don't believe in contact with the spirit world, that is entirely your choice, and debate's are all well and good, but you are being quite critical and judgemental which I personally think is quite rude.

As I said before, there are many people who claim to speak to spirit but it doesn't ring true, but I have had experiences with certain mediums/readers, who have been very accurate, down to telling me things I said at the time I didn't think would happen, but did.

To some who have lost loved ones, a message can be a great comfort, surely that can only be a good thing?

Yes I can't get my head around this either

I would imagine it largely depends how strongly an individual is morally opposed to it. Based on some of the words used to describe clairvoyancy on this thread, you can tell that some are strongly opposed on moral grounds and that will influence any such decision as a venue that holds such evenings is clearly supporting it.

Personally, I don't believe in these things but the strength of which I dislike the practice isn't strong enough to be overly bothered by it.

Contrastly, in an area in which I used to live, the local pub held a rally for a certain "political" organisation that I have such a strong dislike for that I chose never to patronise that establishment again.

Depends how strongly you feel about anything on your reaction to it. So clairvoyant evening not go to as sounds a bit dull; shop selling goods made by child labour boycott.

Still think asking a few customers for their feeling about such an evening first might be a good idea.

  • Just to update those that are interested, i have been speaking this evening to my local spiritulist church about what i am proposing to do in my tea rooms.
They have been fantastic and have offered to come along and help me for free as guest speakers and also offering mediumship, healing if i would like to. They have asked me to send them an e mail to let them know what i will need and they will help me from there.
The most exciting part for me was when i told him that i had a local business and what i was thinking of doing he listened to me for a minute because i asked him if he thought it was a good idea, i then told him again i was local he said yes i know where you are you are opposite the bike shop, i was quite taken back and said how did you know to which he replied maybe because i have been in this business for the last 55 years how weird is that, i honestly did not tell him what or where my business was.
So onwards and upwards from now for those that are interested i will keep you posted, for those that are not try it you might start believing.

Something to do with child labour is very different to what this lady is doing. I think she's come on here for advice regarding an event she's thinking of holding and some people's replies have been a joke.

She run's a tea room and is looking for ways to do different things, good on her. Wish I lived in her town because I'd go.

Yes and I was pointing out that given how people were reacting to the idea here it might be a good idea to see how her customers felt about it. I think a few people went a bit off topic when they got caught up in the whole clairvoyant thing. Still a bit confused by the three year old who knew when people were pregnant comment hard to work that into a tea room business plan.

The only real reason I can see for discussing with her customers would be to drum up interest for people to attend the event.
