    In the US you also pay for those cheques - you don't have the option to get the cheques free from your bank.

    Theoretically, with permission from your bank, you can go to an approved printer and buy personalised cheques. They have to be APACS (UK Payments Council?) approved and follow a lot of rules about size, where text can be put, and where pictures/logos can go.

    Source: Covered for two weeks holiday in NatWest 'Special Cheques' in 1999 where I had to order from the printers and send out the books from stock in the basement of the building. Had to hand-write the envelopes too!

    Not sure how it would compare if you looked at percentage of bad debt against total asset size.

    I suspect Mainwaring type underwriting would still come out as inferior to automated credit scoring.

    That said, while I believe that automated credit scoring is fine, if some idiot decides to allow too many low scores to be accepted, you have a problem!
