Totally agree. Banks use to present themselves with a much more prestigious image in years gone by than they do in this day and age.
I remember the Barclays branch in Exeter used to be at the end of a marble hallway and arranged in a circular fashion with financial times and the such like arranged in the centre of a round table in the middle with... get this... ashtrays! I seem to remember them having only just introduced proper computers for the personal bankers. Before the refit they only had dumb text-only RS232 terminals but they now had I think OS/2 terminals? This would've been about 1989-90.
Now the same building which has "Barclays" carved into the stone atop the old entrance with their Emblem, is home to... a mobile phone store.
Class.
I certainly think that the move banks have made to appeal to the "lesser educated masses" has contributed to societies mis-use of credit. The first sign of this I saw was when the text on the back of my debit card was replaced with what appeared to be part-slang with so many abbreviated words I don't care to mention. Trying to sound "Cool". Well, they sold their credit products to those concerned about image and "being cool" and look where it got them...Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Great find, OP!
I used to work for a bank, and some of my former colleagues managed to collect the old weights and scales that were used to weigh coins. Reckoned they might be worth something some day! From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0 -
My Dad had a Midland Bank Christmas tree bauble (he worked for the Midland all his working life). It is gold with the Griffin symbol on it.
He vowed it would be put on our tree every year whilst the bank still owned our house !
When he retired and the mortgage paid off it was passed on to me and I have continued the tradition, although some years ago I did actually transfer my mortgage to Nationwide !0 -

She had a pic up of a Midland / Natwest ACCESS debit card, too, but it doesn't seem to be there any more

Agree totally with izools, in Glasgow the banks used in to be grand ornate building with huge ceiling and I must admit they could be quite intimidating. It has all changed now, they sold them all off to property developers who turned them into bars and the Crown Post Office into flats.
Those card pictures bring back memories too, I still remember my first TSB Bankcard, it was black with a rainbow on it and the good old Trustcard. They dont make them like they used to.0
