No way on God's green Earth would I run a modern diesel around town.

A kick in the knackers waiting to happen.

Worthless petrol-engined car for that task.

    Oh dear...why not?

I have a '92 diesel vauxhall nova and get about 65MPG (combination of town driving and dual carriageways) - and it passed the legally required emissions test last week in its MOT with flying colours! :D I'm sure its not the most economical thing around, but considering it only cost £150 8 years ago I'm pretty happy!

I'm sure the Prius is a fantastic technology, but I can't help but feel that the technology hasn't yet been developed on a mass scale to an extent that could make a significant difference to the planet...although correct me if im wrong!

Because I have seen far too many of them leave their owners with enormous bills, that is why.

Older diesels are filthy things, banned in many jurisdictions across the world. Newer ones are cleaner, but with that comes complexity and potential for ruinous unexpected expense.

Would not go anywhere near one as a supermarket trolley. Motorway hack yes.

I'm curious, which jurisdictions are those?

I think you need to read a few used car price guides.

The batteries have another four or five years on their warranty.

    learn to use...

07 is from March to September 2007, which makes it less then four years old.

Err....not even close. Depending on the car about two hundred to four hundred (sometimes more sometimes less).

And like I said in that other thread, I think you misunderstand the purpose of the multi-quote function.

I wouldn't recommend an alternative as that was not the OP, and there is no indication of vehicle requirements or budget. Without more information, pulling vehicles out of thin air is not productive.

Total kop out IMHO... slagging off someone else's opinion but then not willing to stick your neck on the line and suggest something better....

As for vehicle requirements - you don't need to know, just suggest something similar.....

The biggest one was on a colleague's Mazda 6 diesel, in which the engine started to consume its own engine oil due to, IIRC, contamination of the turbo. Engine, turbo, clutch, gearbox and several other components were trashed. Total bill (covered under warranty) £9000. I for one wouldn't relish having to pay this myself.

I have also seen several turbo and intercooler failures, costing in the region of £1500-2000 to put right.

As for bans of diesel cars, they were stopped in Japan in 2007 due to not meeting emissions regulations (and are banned in some prefectures), some states in the US have followed (led by California), German cities have banned non-DPF diesels, and New Delhi, Athens, Beijing and Lebanon have outlawed them entirely.

And you don't think that petrol engined cars have expensive problems? To base your opinion of something on one experience is foolhardy to say the least.
