Unless you drive a modern diesel in town!

I can get over 50MPG out of mine in town and as much as 70MPG if I use hypermiling techniques.

Aye good. In a modern diesel just wait till the particulate filter is !!!!ed and it is going nowhere. :p

I barely get 40mpg in mine in town too- constant stop start, you must drive super well to get that.

So at 3 years it has 43% retained value - a 1.6 TDI Passat has 40%

What's your point about depreciation again?

It's an '07' plate, it's now 2011 it could be nearer 4 years old.

Also, do you understand what "average" means?
or are you going to continue with one line responses without actually reading the previous posts properly?

I look forward to your next one line unhelpful response.

As for purchasing a 1yr old Diesel Mondeo for the same money, yes you can, go for that if you're happy being able to see through the bodywork,

And at 4 years old it still has stronger retained value than the Passat according to the What Car? figures - so the depreciation of the Prius is not any worse than other cars in the large hatch/saloon sector.

Fair enough if it's nearly 4 years old and isn't late 2007 registered then the price the OP is quoting is a bit on the expensive side.

...... if the Mondeo isn't good enough what do you suggest for the budget?

Good to see you back tracking for the 3rd time in this thread.

Personally I would not put the Prius in the large hatch sector, but mid-sized; the battery pack takes up some cargo room and can only really seat 4 comfortably (depending on size of course) - but it doesn't have the
rear transmission tunnel which does help with legroom.
The Avensis is more your large sector vehicle from Toyota.

I wouldn't recommend an alternative as that was not the OP, and there is no indication of vehicle requirements or budget. Without more information, pulling vehicles out of thin air is not productive.

Also take into account the Prius is has a very shallow sloped windscreen, and you can find yourself with your head inches away but having to stretch for the steering wheel.

where did I say Retained. I said depreciated... 35% depreciation!!

    No way!

Most cars depreciate 50% in the first three years, then 10-15% easy in the fourth.

Have been offered 07 Prius T spirit, all bells and whistles including leather, 35,000miles, 2 owners - £10,600. 12 month Toyota warranty with balance of 8 year warranty on battery pack. Is this a good buy ?

Heres one that could easily be bought for £9K

Please remember that noone every pays list price for a passat or anywhere near it.

I got a Passat Bluemotion brand new in Jan 2010 discounted down from £20500 to £15650 including metallic paint, mats and flaps - yet the retained value will be calculated by What Car? based on the list price.

The only reason that what car are showing a relatively small discount on the new passat is because its only out.

Also, its interesting that What Car? show the passat as costing £1000 less to own over the three years.

Nobody pays full list price for any car though do they? Just got £1870 (25%) off list of a brand new Kia Picanto, no doubt because the new model is imminent.

Apart from Fords, aparrently (see the thread :rotfl:)

What about those that gain in value?.... they do not all depreciate.

    Hence the average....
