Yes I wear mine every time - even if I'm in a car park.

There are several thoughts to this. First, many people will consider, "why should we abide by the law and you get away with it?"

Secondly, it is not fair on the poor beggars who have to scrape you off the inside of your car and pull bits of your flesh from around the windscreen, bonnet, dashboard, steering wheel etc.

Thirdly, if you don't do it every time, there will be that one time you forget and which will be the very same journey you have a head-on collision, with that forty-four ton truck.

As to you first thought.....:rotfl:So someone should abide by every law, every minute of every day to keep you from feeling self-righteous? Have you ever broken the speed limit?

Your second thought is more reasonable, though it's not happened yet and not very likely to just driving around quiet side-streets.

Your third thought assumes a forgetfull attitude. I'm not forgetting anything.....I simply decide whether I want to wear it or not based on a number of factors. Have you remembered to always abide by the speed limit...every journey, every time? Sure?

Yes, I always wear my seat belt - it doesn't feel right if I dont.

Everyone should wear their seatbelt no matter what the journey is. Even at lower speeds in town rear seat passengers can turn into leathal loose articals that can seriosuly injure the front seat passengers (as well as themselves). In the front its just as important.

Put it like this. Years ago I was in a taxi that came off the road at about 40mph. I was wearing my seatbelt and walked away without injury. My mate who was not wearing a seatbelt suffered injuries to his back which he still suffers from today.

A very similar thing happened to me twenty-one years ago (just before it was compulsory to wear seat belts in the back), when I got a lift from a friend one morning. I got into the front of his BMW coupe. I was a little worse for wear from the night before (hence the need for a lift ;)) I got into the front passenger seat and reached back for the seatbelt, as it was a coupe, the "B" pillar was much further back and in my befuddled sate, I decided it wasn't worth the effort. I gave up and decided that as the journey was relatively short, it really didn't matter. The rear seated passenger behind me saw my struggle and handed me the belt, so I put it on anyway. A short part of the journey was along a fifty mile per hour dual carriageway. The traffic came to a sudden stop ahead of us, but the car in front, panicked and slammed on the brakes, causing the my friend to rear end him. The result was, I had severe bruising across my chest, shoulder and pelvis. The guy behind me banged his head on my head restraint. The other rear seated passenger fared somewhat worse, he broke his neck in four places. The last time I saw him was a year later, as a quadriplegic, at the memorial service for my best friend; the driver of the BMW.

Although he was also wearing a seat belt, the offside rear passenger killed him by smashing his skull when he flew into him.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

    Ooooohh....those things!

Can be quite hard finding the right fuse to pull/bulb to remove on some cars. :)

Err....ever thought it might be trying to tell you something.

So before the law was changed to make it compulsory.......half the population were just bored or had a death wish?

    That's about right.

    Not what I remember but hey-ho. :)
  • I don't think i've ever not worn mine, i don't know why but i feel more comfortable with it on!

i remember seeing a crash a long time ago, the driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt and got flung out the window, must of flew about 10-20ft in the air before landing on her front. suffice to say she didn't pull through and died.
This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.
  • I feel practically naked if I don't have a seat belt on in the car. It's the same weird feeling that I get if I don't have a handbag over my shoulder when I'm leaving the house!

I always put my seat belt on straight away even if I'm sat on the drive waiting for the family (they always take forever getting into the car because they've forgotten something - seriously they do it every time!!)

    Probably just laziness.....

Apart from the obvious risk to myself (and that irksome 'law' stuff), am I really doing anything that bad?

For the record, I always wear it on the m-way and on most country roads. It's just around town, really, that I sometimes find it annoying and may 'forget' to put it on for a bit. I do always insist on any passengers buckling up, btw.

    Thoughts?

It may have been mentioned already, but if not you should google 'contributory negligence' and the case of Froom v Butcher.

To put it in a nutshell, if you are not wearing a seatbelt and are injured in an accident that is not even your fault, if the injuries would have been reduced (or avoided entirely) by wearing the seatbelt then your damages will be reduced by 15%-25%.

Considering the costs of round the clock care for those left severely disabled by an accident (easily £5 million plus), you could be left with a shortfall of £1.25 million. Where would you find that sort of money exactly?

In light of this a trifling fine from the police is the very least of your worries. Only absolute idiots drive without belting up.

Although tbh I suspect this is just a troll thread.
