See stats above, more likely to have an accident closer to home.
As a safety device, the three-point seat belt is astonishingly effective, especially considering its simplicity. Studies show that wearing one reduces the risk of death by car crash injury for a driver or front-seat passenger by about 50 percent; no other safety feature is as important or effective.
In Britain, seat belts save seven lives a day and wearing one has been a legal requirement in front seats since 1982 (1991 in the back). But shockingly, a recent What Car? study found that one in five of us is risking serious personal injury by not belting up routinely.
Guess your the 1 in 5 of us.I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

If you don't wear a seat belt just means that when your car stops suddenly, you wont. As such, the emergency services will need a bodybag, not a stretcher, but at least they won't have to bother rushing.Skip dipper and proud....0

If you are going to be involved in an accident, chances are it will happen close to your home. Progressive Insurance polled 11,000 of its policyholders who experienced accidents in 2001. They found that 52% were involved in accidents within five miles from there home and 69% were involved in accidents within ten miles from their home. Only 17% of those polled experienced accidents beyond twenty miles from his or her home . Your better off waring your seatbelt when you are going around town.
Aaah, statistics.
Most people don't drive far from their home so it's not much of a revelation.
Hope they didn't spend too much money on that survey!0 -

Obviously more time that you thinking up this stupid question.
Let me know where to send the flowers when you have an accident around time.
Its all about your comfort zone.
Some of the dangers of driving within ten miles of your home include sharing the road with people with short attention spans. These people are running an errand and are only going four blocks from where they live. People may not be wearing safety belts. Again, many may have a false sense of security since they are not traveling a long distance from their home.I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

As a previous poster mentioned its just instinct for me now, soon as I sit in the seat, I close the door, put the seatbelt on then sort anything else (radio/sat nav etc).
The thought of someone not using what is such an easy-to-use and proven safety device boggles the mind.0 -

you'd be surprised how many people fail to understand that logic!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
The only time it's legal not to.I dont wear my seatbelt at all.
I am speaking to you from beyond the grave.
I think your either bored or have a death wish. Only time when seatbelt is off is possibly when reversing into a tight spot.
I often don't on coaches. They're irritating especially when going across Europe. Not that I do that often. I understand it was actually legal not to wear one in a coach until 2007? But in a car yes, always, obviously. £30 is too much to pay for the privelege of not wearing one.0
