  • Definately worth it, whilst you should really pay the bills on time anyway, all those £20/£25 charges have effectively been put in a savings account for you all this time.
If you have your last 6 yrs statements, you've already got the most lengthy process of getting your money back.
  • Thanks, I don't think that there are too many of these charges kicking around, don't want you to think that I'm a bad payer....lol

Would be interested to hear from anyone that has claimed already?

    Cheers

Am in the process of claiming from Goldfish, first letter sent last week. Although I note now that 12.00 is charged not 20.00, it hasn't happened that often with me either thankfully just when I cannot be motivated enough to pay it on time through apathy! but I thought the difference of £8.00 on those occasions even would be acceptable though - now just doing/claiming it on principle - it might get me a weeks shopping or a good haircut at least! will also be looking at redoute catalogue and argos.
  • Surfing the forums for a couple of hours I can't find much on claiming back interest incurred at often excessive rates on credit cards.

A relative has amassed over £100,000 in CC debts now principally as a result of interest building over many years (average now adds circa 30k pa). Spread over more than 12 CCs. Has spent years taking new CCs to shuffle money btwn CCs and avoided paying back capital. Has been so good at this that has avoided too many charges being incurred. Sadly is now forced to sell house etc to avoid bankruptcy. We want to help them reclaim as much as we can. Has anyone had any success in claiming back CC interest charges?

I guess this could be tough - when we sign up we know the rates. But arent these punitive and so in breach of UCTA like the charges you help so many recover?

    Anyone fought this battle successfully?

Be delighted to receive views/be pointed to appropriate threads?

    Thanks in anticipation

  • Interest cannot be claimed back, you've borrowed money and the condition of that is you pay interest on it. This is not unlawful at all so you'd have no chance at all of getting this back.

There could be an argument however that unless your family member has a very high income, the credit card companies have been hugely irresponsible to grant this much credit, your family member should shoulder some of the blame though.

I'd get them to visit the CAB as soon as humanly possible
  • Thanks JF - relative is a pensioner so CC banks have been grotesquely irresponsible. Then so has borrower in their eyes. Abundantly clear from any credit reference they mayve taken up that the loan was inappropriate but hey, its all just good business for the CC companies. Nothing secured against the property but I guess they knew they'd get access to it eventually.

I see we have a great moral argument in your 2nd para but wonder how far that could take us in protecting their position?

Maybe CAB is worth a visit.

    Thanks
  • Hi, I want to write to my old bank from two years ago to reclaim charges but I do not have the account number. Does anyone know if the standard letter will do minus the account details and just showing my previous address (where I lived when I had the account) or do I have to know the full details?

  • Hi. I'm new to this and currently taking my bank to task over charges. My question is about an account which has been closed for about 3 years with another bank who made my life hell when I was going through my divorce, even though the problems were temporary, I kept them informed at every stage and was paying a good amount of money in, month in month out. Can I pursue them within the 6 year guideline for charges even though the account is closed? Many thanks. makalu
