I am trying to help my son reclaim bank charges from NatWest.
Over the last three years my son has had to pay unauthorised overdraft charges every month of £28. This has often been charged even when it has been the previous months charge that has made the account exceed the agreed limit. He only works part-time and is low payed so he is having great problems trying to keep the account in credit each month so the charges don't apply.
Is it advisable to try to claim back these charges (about £900) when they are still applying them each month, or is he best advised to get the account in order first?
Do NatWest close customers accounts that make claims for repayment?
Any advice about NatWest policy on this issue and what would be the best way to proceed greatly appricted.

Hi sorry I have not done this before hope I am doing it right.
I am going through my bank charges and the £28 pound charge is on my statements also but I think this is for being overdrawn and is like the interest at a higher rate. If I have this correct I don't think you can claim it back? Can anyone confirm this Please.

You can claim overdraft excess fee but not overdraft interest,

Hi Kez thank you for your reply but I am really thick and in a flap. My bank statements just say charges and my bank account number and in the withdrawl section £28, £20, and even one for £9. There is no explanation as to if it is an overdraft excess fee or overdraft interest fee, however it generally follows an interest charge but only states interest. Is any of this making any sense.

Hi Sylvi, This is how I see it but will stand corrected if anyone has other information. We had all our statements so didn't have to ask for a schedule of charges - I wouldn't call them fees by the way - our NatWest Current Plus account statements show :

    23 Feb Charges - UNPAID ITEM(S)
    D/D £16.00
    BT DIRECT DEBITS 38.00 *reclaim

    28 Feb Interest 05FEB -A/Cxxxxxxxxx 14.80 don't reclaim

    Charges 05FEB -A/Cxxxxxxxxx 28.00 *reclaim

First type of charge appears each time a direct debit, standing order or cheque you have issued is returned unpaid as you have broken your agreement to have sufficient cleared funds available. This is a penalty so reclaim it.

Interest is the agreed monthly interest charged on the account overdraft so not reclaimable.

The second charges amount is for exceeding the agreed overdraft limit between 6th Jan and 5th Feb this should only appear once in any month it is a penalty for breaking the contract so reclaim it.

I haven't had £9.00 pr £20.00 charges but suspect these apply to a different type of current/card account if they have not been agreed as administrative fees *see Terms and Conditions then you may be able to reclaim them.

Sorry if this is only part of your answer but hope it helps. Good Luck.

    Still waiting!!
  • Hi all.

Got a letter from NatWest today (after a 14 week wait (I forgot I had even sent it, it's been such a busy time) saying they will settle at £170. Not bad as I had only asked for £142.

Anyway, they say they will pay it directly into my account. Only problem is I closed the account because I kept getting charges, even when I settled it. Do you think I can request it to be paid into another bank account? Can't seem to get hold of anyone who can help at the moment.

    Anyone experienced this?

    Cheers

I rang the number mentioned above (0845 303 0456) and spoke to really nice lady who checked my details and also gave me a reference number as there hadn't been one on the letter sent to me. She said that my letter had been in for three weeks requesting £2100 and as they were really busy it would be another 5 weeks although they are trying to catch up.
I'm happy to wait, its not worth ruffling their feathers at this stage as I'm sure it alters what they offer - shall ring in another two weeks just to check!
    I'm looking forward to July!!!

Just called Natwest and they reckon about 2 weeks to get on to the system. Then 8 weeks from when they key the complaint in - I don't think so!

i had my account as an advantage gold account, not realising i was paying 6 quid a month (to have it as an advantage gold account). it did nothing for me, i gained no advantages through it and for some reason i got lots of brochures about going hot air ballooning and going on cheese weekends in france.

i've never gone over my agreed overdraft limit yet, but they charge me for using my `overdraft`. is this reclaimable?

its sometimes not clear cut what you can and can't clear back.

    cheers in advance.

EDIT. Does anybody know the direct number to speak to somebody at natwest for getting your statement copies?

    thanks again.
