I am just about to send a letter to HSBC to get my last 6 years bank charges, in the main article it metions going slightly over your overdraft, however a few years ago I was very irresponsible with my account and went approx £500 over my overdraft. Can I still claim my charges back or am i just waisting my time?
Thanks in advance.0 -
You can claim the charges back irrespective of the amount you exceeded your overdraft.0

Hello There, :santa2:
I saw that some of you had some luck in claiming bank charges from the HSBC, well done.
I'm in a similar position and in need of some advice. I've been charged, in total, £3238.00 since March 04 by the HSBC for: Overdrafts, Unpaid Items, Card Missuse, Recalls and Total Charges. Only £161.00 of these charges were under £12.00 (I read that £12 is an appropriate amount for banks to charge). I just sent a letter asking for a full refund or court action but had no response.
1, Can I claim the entire £3238 even though £161 is under £12 worth of charges?
2, What should I do now that they have ignored my letter and exceeded the 14days I gave them to reply or repay?
Any advice would be welcomed.0 -
1. Most people are claiming all of it
2. Follow the instructions at the top of the forum. If you sent the initial approach, you should have given them 14 days to respond. If they haven't done so, send your Letter Before Action giving them a further 14 days. After that you file a claim against them.0 -

Hi all! After sooo much reading and ploughing through tons (and still not all) the info/posts on here I have now decided I want to get the ball rolling with trying to get my bank charge back. I can't find an answer to a couple of things i would like to know..
first, I have 2 accounts with HSBC one is a normal account that I spend out of which I have just worked out I have been charged nearly £2,000 over 6 years and I have another account with them that I call my bills account(not worked out the charges yet!) which all my direct debits etc get paid from... I just wondered when I send my first letter.. do I request the refund of charges from both my accounts in one letter or do I send 2 seperate letters for each account?
also.. i have read lots of success stories about refunds from hsbc and i wondered if they have a habit of closing your account after any success or not? not seen much about that.. hope someone can help!

I found it easier to send seperate letters for each account. I couldn't tell you if they will close your account or not but it may be an idea to set up a parachute account just in case it happens.

One letter, and one £10 payment is enough to get info on both accounts. You are asking the bank for all the info they hold on you (as is your right under the DPA). It doesn't matter how many accounts this includes (still active or closed)
Read THIS THREAD to see which banks people are reporting back as closing your account when you've claimed. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Have a read of Martin's article here
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1141050760,24632
and follow the steps. Add into your letter that you accept the £25 in part payment but will be claiming the full amount.0
