Paying cash, both local Ford main dealers.
Tried to haggle but to know avail, they just weren`t interested.
In fact one advised me to go with DTD when I told him their price.

As regards not doing a deal over the phone, why not, there`s no P/E involved, all I want is a price.
I would have to go to the dealership anyway if the price was OK.

My point is they couldn`t match the online price but you could end up getting it from them, at that same price, once your details have been passed on.

The simply reason why they don't want to do a deal over the phone is that they don't want to let their competitors know their bottom line.

The way the other garages used to find out this was to phone up and ask on the phone like you have done.

That fact that you are asking for a price for cash with no part-ex also makes the dealer think you are a dreamer or somebody just doing research with no intention of buying.

You need to get yourself down to some garages and speak face to face, then they will take you seriously.

If I was looking to buy fairly new then other than the usual suspects like DTD etc I would consider Motorpoint or Fords Of Winsford, theese are the two supermarkets that are best at doing deals on newer cars and preregistered cars.

If I want an ex fleet car I go to CarGiant, if I want nearly new cars, such as a Fiesta or Corsa then they are the two I would use.

I know several companies that bought ten or more cars at a time from Motorpoint and FoW.

Here is an example of a 60 plate car at Motorpoint http://www.motorpoint.co.uk/(S(ta55m455f02ctxrtim35pa55))/Search/VehicleDetails.aspx?vehicle=307947, not sure if that is a good or bad price, but seem reasonable.

This is a roughly similar vehicle but on a 10 plate and is almost £2000 dearer http://www.ford.co.uk/Cars/FordDirect/VehicleLocator

The new list price appears to be about £13.5k for the same 1.4 petrol Zetec model.

To be honest you would be lucky to match DTD, unless you where prepared to take a car that was already in dealer stock, which is normally what DTD and other brokers tend to do anyway, which is why you have to wait for specific options.

If I was in the market for a new shape Fiesta and wasn't bothered about being the first owner I would look seriously at the Fiesta at Motorpoint, it is around 6 months old, with admittedly a few thousand miles on the clock, but is almost £4000 less than new, possibly they may knock off a bit for cash, however they do prefer to sell you a car on finance, my mates son bought a preregistered Impreza WRX there a few years ago, it had delivery miles on it and was £7 grand less than the new price, he sold it to his dad a few months ago, the car has been trouble free from new. The Subari warranty was also fully applicable.

I have never understood this, it's the same with written quotations. If another dealer wanted to research the competition, all they had to do would be to turn up at the other dealer's premises and pretend to be a genuine customer.

The excuse about written quotations is always been one of some amusement to me. Most businesses (all sensible businesses that is) would newer commit capital or revenue on this scale, without a written quotation; the dealers themselves wouldn't do it, but they expect their customers to. The excuse is that they belive he customer will take the written quotation and show it to another dealer; they say no other dealer would be as stupid. The problem with that is, if I tell them I have better price from another dealer, they ask for proof in writing. They expect other dealers to do it (although, apparently no other dealer does it anyway), but they won't do it themselves.

If they have offered me their "best price," as they say, why should I need to go anywhere else and if I did, wouldn't the other dealer offer me the same anyway, seeing as it is the "best price." If they are not confident enough in their skills as sales people, or their prices, that is their problem.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

It does seem silly, but I know people in the trade that used to do this, normally when they said they were going to talk to the "manager".

If you know the cheapest price your product is available from your competition then you can easily undercut by a few quid.

Ford dealers are on enough sales related target bonuses to want to hit them at whatever cost.

I think that if the OP goes to her local Ford dealer with a printed off copy of a quote from DTD then they will almost certainly make an effort to get close, as they know they have every chance of securing the servicing work for the next few years.
