Council move, not entitled to HB and running up huge debts!

The OP's sums simply do not add up. Why are they running up debts? They have more than enough to live on.
I think I have explained a number of times where the debts are running up. £950 approx per month rent, £150 council tax, £700 kennels and storage costs, £200 to travel to work, gas and electricity, food etc. We are living off less than £100 per week for a family of four. We also need to try and start putting money away for carpets, wallpaper, paint etc...0 -

Have you not learned from this that you don't want to be spending lots on decorating a rental property? All you really need is a few cans of paint. If you contact a local housing/ furniture charity they'll probably be able to provide this for you.Gone ... or have I?0 -
No charity is going to help us when they find out how much money we earn. We need to put carpets down...council houses are given to you with no floor coverings. The state of the walls in some of the properties means that we probably can't just paint on the walls...our last property was given to us with drawings all over the walls. Getting carpets or laminate fitted in a 2/3 bedroom house will be in excessive of £750.
Plus, I refuse to allow my kids to grow up in a house that they would be embarrassed to bring their kids into. My Mum has MS and therefore cooking and cleaning was left to me (from the ages of 7 upwards) and I could never bring anyone into our house as it was messy and poorly decorated. I want better for my kids.0 -

Paint won't provide a cover for a floor though will it?
The week before I moved into this house last year, we papered every room apart from the kitchen and bathroom and carpeted right throughout (again not the bathroom or kitchen).
A few cans of paint just wouldn't have done it.
And why shouldn't people spend lots on decorating a rented property anyway?
So long as we aren't a nuisance and the rent gets paid, we can live here for as long as we want to, so why not make the place look nice?Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
Oh absolutely!
A friend who I worked with has worked full time for God knows how long. She lives in a Council House and has looked after it very well over the years.
Last year the council were going around the area, replacing kitchens and bathrooms. Someone came out to see her but then she heard no more, so telephoned. She was told that there was nothing wrong with her kitchen and bathroom so they wouldn't be getting replaced.
She asked them that if she'd trashed them or hadn't looked after them, would they be getting replaced and she was told Yes.
Disgusting it is.
It would be a total waste of money replacing a perfect kitchen. Also the new kitchens are cheap and dont last and will fall apart quick.Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0 -

Many of these charities help on a non means assessed basis. I know ours does. There is no way that basic carpets will cost more than £750. Get roll ends and you should be able to do it for half that amount.Gone ... or have I?0 -

The point is, they were replacing those that weren't looked after.
If you don't look after what you have, you shouldn't get handed brand new replacements, while the people who DO look after them, don't get updated.
How do you know the new kitchens are cheap, don't last and will fall apart quick unless you know the council I'm talking about?Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

Fitting can cost more than the carpeting in some cases, so it's not as easy as just buying roll ends.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
Ever heard of DIY? It really is not difficult, if you actually want to save money!
Would you be able to fit a carpet? Maybe one up a staircase and around the corners top and bottom, plus don't forget the bit at the bottom which sometimes have to be hand stitched?
If I'm paying for carpet, I'm not going to try and fit it myself and make a complete balls up of it am I?
If that's your point, then heck, why not have NO floor covering and just live with the floorboards or concrete floors? That'll save a few quid.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0
