Council move, not entitled to HB and running up huge debts!

  • Well done on finding a cheaper kennel :T

I know things are tough at the moment but if you and partner have decided to wait it out and see where the council place you then that's what you have decided to do, so please don't overly worry about it - you have 2 beautiful children to be focussing on and I'm sure they don't want an unhappy Mummy - remember, you could still be in the house you loved, but you'd be putting yourself and your kids at risk - at least you are all now safe. This new place is only temporary, and you can cover the bills, even if you have to run to a tight budget.

Have you written a formal letter to the council asking for the "extras" you mentioned above (furnished / support) to be taken off, so you could just pay basic property rent? It obviously isn't the law of the land that the charge should be that high and perhaps if you got your complaint to the right person they could reduce it. Why don't you find out how much a comparable private let property is in the same area and offer to pay that much? That would be more than fair IMHO.

Our total income is £1750 per month wages, £404 incapacity benfit, £120 CB and £400 CT & WTC as based on last year when I wasn't earning anywhere near as much. So in total about £2,500.

We contacted MP but not much help...just told to pay as much as we can and the council will accept repayment plan later :(

Im sure you need to notify tax credits if our income increas by so much as our most certainly being overpaid. Ours was based on previous years income and come following year as our income increased by £3k we were overpaid almos £1k.

Also you may qualfy for some HB if your being paid less tax credits and being overpaid will increase your debts!
Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.

Thankyou for your reply. I am on Wolverhampton's choice letting system, but due to being out of city for more than 6 months and also being suitably housed in a 3 bed at the moment, I'm not a priority. I have strong local connection in Wolves and was born and raised, but it doesnt have any sway.

I am prepared to go private. I would never put my children through homelessness scenario. We've all been through enough so Im trying to make this as painfree as possible for them. Changing schools and leaving friends is hard enough.

I have support from school support workers and the police. As isolated as I feel right now, I know I only have to pick up the phone and someone will be here. Its only for a couple of weeks and then it will be over.

    Thank you again.
Yeah I understand you not wanting to go down the homelessness route, it's bSICALLY LUCK OF THE DRAW, oops sorry about caps!

Whilst the people who own there houses, are the ones who usually suffer.

To balance that out, my neighbours own their home and have caused nothing but trouble for others around here.

In all fairness, some of us do spend alot of money doing up our houses, I want my flat to look nice and for my flat to look the way I want it to look a few hundred pounds aint gonna cut it........BUT I will pay the money out in the knowledge that I could not be there forever ('owning' your own house does not guarantee it for life either does it)

    Agree, DKAM.

I paid out to have some double glazing fitted. I can't take that with me when we go, but had the benefit of it whilst here. Same with the kitchen work surfaces, the internal doors.

Over the years I've spent a fair bit here and will do in the new property. I may not own it, but it's my home.

It may be that you have a case against the council as they have a responsibility as the landlords to deal with any antisocial behaviour by their tenants. The Tenancy Agreement should state that the tenant should not act in an antisocial manner and nor should any guests in their property. If the tenant breaches these terms they would be liable for eviction. If the landlord refuses to evict then they can be held accountable.

If I were in your situation, I would swiftly get a copy of the council housing dept's complaints procedure and follow it.

    Absolutely, Alleycat.

I think it's an awful thought that people feel that you should only be in a council house if you are on benefits - where is the incentive to improve your life if you only get things if you sit on your !!!!.

Not everyone in council housing, on benefits does that. Stereotyping much?

Possibly the four bed is already furnished?

Even if it is, you'd still be able to get a fair amount of other furniture into the unused bedrooms if you stack it properly.

The OP has explained that they can't do that as they have someone come round the check the rooms. God knows why!
