  • Firstly, if this should be in another board, apologies.

A few years ago I got into arrears on our mortgage. The bank very kindly charged us £50pcm for every month we were behind with payments. In total they must have added somewhere in the region of £700 to our mortgage balance over time.

My question is, are these charges equally as dubious as charges made for bounced cheques/DD's etc?

Edit: We are no longer with this particular lender so we have nothing to fear by attemting a reclaim.
  • This is something I would be very interested in finding out about. Also what about mortgage redemption fees. My lender who forced me to change my mortgage then sell my house, hit me for a couple of grand as I had changed my mortgage within the last two years (at their insistence!).

Boy, could I do with part of that back at the moment.

I know you cannot claim back redemption penalties on a mortgage. However, you can claim for Mortgage Exit Administration Fee. This is usually the amount you are quoted as being charged when leaving the mortgage company. (i.e. Halifax quoted me £135 but charged £175 when I left - therefore they had to reimburseme £40).

However, charges for missed payments I would presume is claimable. Good luck!
  • Is it possible to reclaim 'Arrears Admin Fees'? We were charged £35 per month for 12 months about 5 years ago by the woolwich and would like to reclaim them if possible. I am claiming account charges from the Halifax at the moment and was made an offer of £631.50 (exactly half of the charges amount without interest) on Tuesday of this week which I have refused, I am really hoping to get £1000 back from them otherwise I'll be off to court !!
  • I had a similiar set up with Bradford & Bingley BS, only they charged me £25 each month.

I too would like to know if these fees may be reclaimed..

Anyone out there able to advise please.

Can you claim for the late payment charges Mortgage companies whack on to your account if you miss a payment. I have done a quick search on this site and can't find anything on it.

I know its in your terms and conditions when you take out the mortgage but its also in your bank's terms and conditions, (or catalogue accounts) If £20 is an unfair amount for banks to charge why isn't it an unfair amount for mortgage companies.

I always thought it unfair when I was going through financial difficulties when you were charged by both the bank and the mortgage company for missing a payment. After all you do pay additional interest when you miss a payment.

Does anyone agree. Come on Martin!?

  • Hi there I have just read on another site similar to Martin's that it is exactly the same process to claim from your mortgage charges as it is for your bank charges except for mortgage charges you can go back 12 years. I am just about to start the process !!! Good Luck x

  • Hi
Can I claim back loan charges in the same way as bank charges? I am being charged an extortionate amount of money relating to a late payment a few years ago when I moved house.
I've already written to them twice but have had no response. Do I use the same letter templates that are shown here to claim back bank charges or do I use something different? If so does anyone know where I can find them? Sorry for loads of questions but I've only just found out about it and I'm devastated

Any advice would be really appreciated

    Hi

Just wondered if anyone knows if it is possible to claim back charges from a loan?

We took out a loan fro £10,000.00 in June 2000 - got into a bit of a sticky situation in 2002 & loan got referred to Moorcroft debt recovery in Dec 2002 (owing balance of: £7300.00). So far we have managed to get it down to £2922 with the help of CCCS. I just want to get rid of my debts as soon as I can & thought if I could claim back the charges it would help bring the balance down quicker.

Has anyone been succesful esp with Direct Line??

    Thanks
  • my mortgage company is charging stupid fees for mis payments and letters can i claim these back:confused:
