This is just a rather underhand way of reducing by half the points you currently get with your existing card.:money:

    Also posted from me.

    Its done.

I had a Mastercard as well as a Visa a few years ago and hardly ever used it. The visa was accepted almost everywhere as was not the case with Mastercard.

    I finally cancelled it.

There are also many references in these posts to less points on newer cards!

Thanks, but my existing card (and, I think, all current Tesco cards) only gives 1 point for every £2 spent outside Tesco. Exactly the same as the new card, but no bonus 650 points.

I think many of the people deciding to keep their old cards are doing so in the mistaken belief that they're getting more points than they actually are.

Clubcard Plus (if you have one) is still the best option for instore shopping - 2 points per £.

I can see very good reasons for moving away from Tesco cards altogether for better deals elsewhere, but does anyone have a particularly good reason for wanting to keep the old card?

    I haven't really seen one yet. :)

I've opted to keep mine for a few reasons, none of them to do with the points:
I, too, have experience of Mastercard not being accepted in some places, in the UK and abroad, but have never had this problem with Visa.
I have a couple of other cards which were previously Visa but have already been changed to Mastercard - this is now my last remaining Visa card - and I prefer to have the option of both in case of those odd occasions when one or other system is down.
We want to apply for Olympic tickets and these can only be paid for by Visa.
2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shading
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

  • I agree Doc N. When I signed up for my Tesco CC years ago it was 1 point per £2 spent, with the usual points added from your Tesco shop it works out as 3 points per £2 spent in Tesco. Maybe people signed up to different deals at different times so you would have to work out which is the better deal for you.
For me the points are no different but the annual bonus makes the new card a better deal.

Tesco have done a magnificent job of muddying the waters so much with all their different cards that few, if any, of us can now say with any certainty what points we're accumulating. Confusion marketing is the term.

I can see why people would want to keep one Visa card, and if Tesco is the only one someone currently has, that might make sense.

You and I are in the same position - and my guess is that most others are, too: the 'free' 650 point bonus on the new card is the only material change. :)

That is only if the retailer accepts Mastercard! I found that it is not always the case.
I found a good cheap local car hire company abroad somewhere but could not use him because he accepted Visa but not Mastercard.

Have never had the problem the other way round, and I travel about a bit.

650 points (or £6.50 in cash) is not enough of a bribe for me to accept a Mastercard, it could cost me that the first time I wanted to use it, and could not!
  • I just called to decline their kind offer. Unfortunately there's no alternative number on SayNoTo0870.com but it was answered within a minute, after having to listen to a recorded message.

The guy didn't try to persuade me to change my mind but he did offer a 0% BT until September with no fees if I wanted. Unfortunately I didn't have any details immediately to hand, otherwise I might have been tempted. Anyone else planning to phone might be advised to be more prepared!

Must be a lot of opt outs for them to start offering more sweetners! ;)
  • Not that it would apply to me as I dont use Esso stations, but I got my Tesco Visa bill in this morning and there was a leaflet in it promoting Tesco Credit Cards on it it says in very small print " you cannot collect points on Esso fuels".

So I read that as, if you buy petrol from an Esso station and use your Tesco Mastercard you do not get any points at all? :money:

Seems to apply to all their cards:
