Seems to be a recurring problem.

Instincts and opinions at the matter seem to point to a data migration problem - ie reactivating accounts that were previously closed.

HLC team are looking into this for me at the moment.

Ofcom warned talktalk specifically not to do this back in December 2010.

  • Hi Stephen

So glad to see your post! Hope you can help!

For just over 3 weeks have had problems with the internet which is wireless. I live in a 2 story house with 1 computer in the loft, one netbook in the bedroom and 1 laptop in the lounge. No problems for 7 years until now.

Talktalk first advised to change the microfilters - this done it was established the modem was faulty as no lights - bought a Zyxel to replace it but this only connected occasionally - so advised to replace it - so bought a Netgear which was better but still kept losing connection and was really really really slow - then recieved a talktalk HG521 - connection marginally better for all computers but still really slow - advised for an engineer visit and he established wireless of 7-8 up and 3 down and wired was 12 up - he advised there was a wireless congestion perhaps due to other uses and so couldn't help me - that evening went to use the computer in the loft and connection is worse than ever and the other 2 devices don't connect at all - on Sunday connected all devices by wire and they worked - removed the wire and they still worked - set them up downstairs and nothing again - connection is still very very dodgy on the main computer - have phoned talktalk and spoke to every man going but still no nearer to solving the problem!

Any advice is very gratefully recieved. Thank you for your time.

    Hi Debbie,

What you have described is common for people in older homes or like yourself "2 story house" and regardless of who your ISP is you would still have this same issue as we dont control the wireless conditions in your home.

Wireless is great however a number of devices do affect the signal which results in you either have an intermittent connection or a massive reduction in speed. For best wireless cover you should ideally have an "N" router however you will also need to make sure that your wireless adapters in your computers are also "N" compatible otherwise your not going to get the benefit of an "N" router.

If upgrading everything to "N" isn't an option you could always try moving the router to the center of your home rather than being on the ground floor, this may help your laptop on the loft.

The other thing to consider is possible interference, this could come from cordless phone, Tv`s come to think of it most electrical stuff. Make sure your router isn't next to a cordless phone base station or any other electrical device, you could also try changing the wireless channel on your router, its very possible that other people in the area have a router on the same channel as you which will case issues, changing the channel could help improve this.

If you have any other questions just ask ;)

  • Hi Stephen - Thank you for your quick reply!

The modem has always been kept in the loft and the only electrical devices within range are a computer and printer which has always been the case.

Regarding other users - that could be true in the evening but during the day majority of my neighbours work and those that don't are elderly and don't have computers. I have spoken to quite a few of my neighbours and it appears no one is having the same problems as myself.

Could you please explain what a level N router is?

    Many thanks

  • To all talk/talk and ex talk/talk/tiscali surfers. I think if Stephen the resident talk/talk Rep was made CEO for the company they might have a chance of turning things around.

Thanks for solving my problem so quickly,

I am having ongoing problems with Talk Talk.

    1) For at least the last month, my broadband speeds have plummeted. I am on an 8mb contract and used to regularly get around 6mb much of the time. I stream online TV, and it was always fine.

Now I am getting dire broadband speeds, measured at 1mb, 0.5mb and even 175KB, which is 1/50th of the paid for service. Streaming TV has become impossible.

I recognise that one doesn't generally get the full advertised speed, but in my case I am no longer getting anything like the speed I used to enjoy, which indicates the problem is with TalkTalk. I believe the shortfall is so great, that TalkTalk are in breach of contract, and in breach of the Sale of Goods Act [which says 'All goods you sell must:
correspond with any description given - verbally, in writing or in an illustration; be of satisfactory quality; be fit for their purpose'].
Charles Dunstone, who I have contacted direct, appears to be totally uninterested in this substantial deterioration in service. Shame on you, Charles.

    2) TalkTalk appear to be in breach of their contractual obligations again as they have charged me a January bill but have not provided details of what the bill covers. As it is 4 times the usual amount, this is more than essential.

    3) Talk Talk again appear to be in breach of the Direct Debit Guarantee. I have not been properly informed of a price increase that appears to be about to be forced upon customers. In the past few months I have had such a variety of letters and emails saying completely contradictory things about the price increase that I remain unclear what is true and what not. I do not therefore consider that TalkTalk have yet given me the 30 days notice required before any increased amount is taken from my account by direct debit. Again, Charles Dunstone has had the opportunity to respond on this, and declined.

Solutions please? I am about to go very public indeed. Very.

    Jacky
