A quick hello from me. Not been feeling that well over the past week or so. Only sick once thankfully but my stomach on the bus journeys to work definitely needs some controlling (and sick bags at the ready).
Had a phone consultation with my GP last Friday (quicker than seeing her in person). She thought I had made it to 8 weeks based on my LMP of 29th Feb. Did mention to her that my cycles were approx 37 days so I didn't think things were that far gone.
Got my booking in with the MW on Tuesday, when I hopefully get an in-date Emma's Diary (the one left for me at the Dr's was for 2010-11!! - all vouchers out of date)
Hope everyone's okLittle man arrived 13 Dec 20120 -

Toxic
Predatory fish (tuna, shark, swordfish) - high levels of mercury
Pate/liver or other liver products - high levels of Vitamin A
Alcohol - can cause foetal alcohol syndrome
Everything else is just considered to be 'a risk' - it's not that eating it WILL cause any problems, it's just that if you get food poisoning from it, it could cause problems. You need to consider the risk. Pregnant women are told not to eat lots of things because of the risk of listeria, but liseria is incredibly rare, AND the last major outbreak was in the US and because of contaminated melons. At no point have pregnant women been told to avoid fruit and veg but they have been and are sources of listeria infection.
Also, dippy eggs are fine as long as you get your eggs from the supermarket - all hens producing eggs for commercial use in this country are innoculated against salmonella.
This is quite a good article on the subject: http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2007/may/29/health.medicineandhealth?cat=society&type=article
Hope that helps - sorry, this is a bit of a hobby horse of mine, it drives me bonkers that educated woman can't be given the right information to make informed decisions, you have to hunt for it.
Re. alcohol it's worth pointing out that there's never been any suggestion that light drinking will cause FAS. Problem is, it's difficult for some people to determine what 'light' means. Additionally people metabolise alcohol differently and two women drinking the same amount might transfer vastly different amounts to their baby via the placenta. Hence the current advice is to avoid alcohol completely.
This could be deemed as another example of not encouraging people to make informed decisions. Alternatively you could argue that pregnancy's only nine months and it's not exactly a hardship to give stuff up temporarily."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
thanks for that sarara. you are right there is loads of info but no one gives it us and we have to hunt. i hope the gp gives me enough next week even though i have learnt from other sources. the NHS website is good too for info.

Just had my daily avocado....feeling quite well today (compared to the last few days) so making the most of it! Must go shopping for more!
Little Moog - I'm sorry you are poorly today
Finding planning of evening meals really difficult. I really fancy something all day long, get the food out of the freezer, cook the meal and then I feel sick looking at it and don't want to eat it but fancy something else. Not a big fan of food waste so trying to force the original meal down me. Almost went to McDonald's last night because I really really wanted a Big Mac! Didn't though based on the fact by the time I got there I'd probably feel sick looking at it!
I'm also really struggling with this, not feeling up to doing major cooking, but don't fancy any of the things that DH can make. He's rubbish at deciding what to cook too, as I normally do the evening meal since I get in an hour earlier. It doesn't help that all i want to eat is comfort/nursery food like shepherd's pie and macaroni cheese, but DH doesn't really like them and doesn't know how to cook them. I want to go home for a few days and get fed up a bit!Little monkey born November 2012:jFroglet due March 20160 -
Oh, absolutely fluffnutter - when I say that those items are toxic, I meant that with increased consumption there is increased risk. I think that the current guidelines on predatory fish is something like not more than two portions per week, and with alcohol I'm not sure but it's either 'banned', or one measure a couple of times a week - they change the guidelines depending on how well they think we can be trusted. I'm not sure about liver, and it's not for want of looking for the info - I'm missing pate much more than I miss tuna or wine!0

Even with that, I'm not sure what I take out is what I want to eat 8 hours later. Tinned food, 'cook from frozen' and packet food has been my friend these past few days. Supernoodles for dinner two nights ago
at least there isn't any waste of food then. Is it possible for you to cook up some comfort food and freeze it? Not sure what to suggest for the changing appetite...
I have plenty of frozen portions in the freezer, chilli, casserole, curry, ragu etc but can't seem to fancy any of them.if I feel less grim this afternoon I may attempt a shepherd's pie, not sure if I'll fancy it once I've made it though!
I had some at a restaurant when I was away for a friend's wedding a few weeks ago and it really hit the spot.

I don't think it's fair that I actually started to crave brie once I became pregnant!
I did finally find a pasteurised one though. Nmom nmom.
Re. liver and pate, there are two things going on:
Liver contains a lot of Vit A, too much of which is bad for the baby (would feature on your toxic list).
Re. pate, it's twofold. Not only does it contain Vit A (if made with liver) but it can also be a source of listeria. This applies to any type of pate, and not just those made with liver."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0
