Hi Hayley, you usually get your booking appointment at about 8-10 weeks then your scan somewhere around 12 weeks. You'll have bloods done at your booking appointment, Blood pressure, weight and urine checked and then loads of filling in forms, I think its usually about an hour long appointment!! The time taken to inform you of the appointments seems to differ alot but I was phoned with my midwife appointment then she told me when my scan was. Other than that they leave you to get on with it unless you have any problems!
Thank you for the reply
Will they be able to tell from my blood when I am due? Just wondering how they will tell?

They will give you a due date from your scan so they'll estimate for a start but yours probably won't be that accurate with not knowing the date of your last period then they correct it at the scan as all babies grow at pretty much the same rate up to 13 weeks.0

Did you need to book in with the midwife? Or did the doctor/sister do it for you? I am just really worried that I haven't heard anything - I know it is only really early, but just thought I would have heard. Also, did you get confirmation of appointment via post, or phonecall?
Good Luck with the midwife, and congrats

Glad you DD is better rjh, good luck today
Welcome and congratulations Hayleyholly like Lisa said, depending on your area, your booking in appointment with the midwife should be between about 8-10 weeks and your scan between 10-14 weeks. It is quite usual for your GP surgery to pass on your details to the midwife and hospital and there to be a wait. My area has recently changed the procedure for booking in and the midwife sees you as soon as possible now but that is unusual.
The booking in will be taking your blood pressure and some blood and then a LOT of questions about the family medical history of both you and the father. These then make up your "notes" which you take to every appointment and which you should carry around with you incase you need to seek medical treatment at anytime.
The dating scan is the most accurate way of finding out how far along you are. If they check your blood HcG levels that can give you a rough indication but in early pregnancy there is such a wide range of levels your hormones can be at each week that it's not that accurate.

My area now let you book an appointment with the midwife but it used to be (and I believe that this is the more common way) that the doctor would inform the midwife and they would send you an appointment through the post.

Thank you for the reply emsbet
So, would the scan be the dating scan? As I am totally confused as to what is what, haha. I didn't know whether they would send me for a dating scan and then the 12 week scan?
Thank you very much for your advicexxx

The scan you have between 10-14 weeks is used for dating, and also for checking general development of the baby. There is also the nuchal fold test where they assess the risk that your baby could have Downs (can only be done between 11 and 14 weeks I think). This part is optional and I'm not sure if it's offered in all areas. There some more information here that you might find useful. Babycentre is a good website in general there's loads of information on what to expect and what to do/not do during your pregnancy.

Hayley, I first saw the doctor just to tell him that I was pregnant. He gave me the usual advice about no alcohol, no smoking, take folic acid etc, told me how many weeks I was and then asked me to book an appointment with the midwife for when I would be 8 weeks. I booked my own appointment with the midwife who is based at my surgery two days a week. I am guessing that after this appointment she will arrange for my scan and I expect confirmation of that will come through the post.0
