Yes they can. The length of the phase of your cycle just prior to ovulation (and therefore ovulation itself) can vary from cycle to cycle and can be lengthened or shortened by many factors. These include stress (including good stress), illness, medication and alcohol consumption.

The assumption is that the average woman will ovulate on the 14th day of her cycle, but this isn't the case for most women and even those who have a regular cycle can have the occassional one where they ovulate earlier or later than usual.

hey Gilly. mine is normally 28 days, but when i initially went to see GP after getting test positive, i thought i would be 2 weeks as i am sure of the date when my and hubby you know?? :p so i thought 2 weeks and then the doc said nearly 5 weeks, and i was like what? i just went ahead with it, until the scan last week. if i didnt bleed i wouldnt have known that!

Well seems like your Doc has done the same as mines then and is going by LMP.

Because my baby was a happy surprise shall we say :p I know exactly when he was conceived, and knew the dates she was giving me were wrong. I have a 35 day cycle so was even more out with the date she gave me.

When I went for my first scan, they sent me at 11+4, and as soon as the radiographer asked my Gestational Date, and saw the baby on screen she said right away, that she didn't think my dates were right and put me back to 9+2, which was pretty crap, but meant I got another scan and got to see baby again :)

So I wouldn't worry too much as it sounds like similar has happened to you.

  • Hello.
I'm back after a lovely weekend with my family so havent been abouts. Hope no one worried!!!
I've got my Dr appointment at 2.30 today so hopefully things will get rolling soon. I asuming it will be the same as with my first. Dr asks whats up, I say I'm pregnant, she takes my blood pressure and gives the doings for the receptionist, I get my baggie of goodies and wait for a midwife to phone me.
Couldn't be a bigger waste of time! lol Allthough I like the freebies lol the Bounty books are always a really good read for week by week stuff.
Oddly though I have been checking my dates and I havent had my visit from you know who since the 5th of november. And there is no way I'm that pregnant!!!So I don't think you can always trust your own dates lol.
Off to catch up with all the weekends gossip.

P.S Congrats to all the lovely newbies :)

cool.. i seem to have more hope then as i thought i would be ovulating after 14 days as my periods are the usual 28 days,, but like you said it could have been later as me and hubby def had some fun more near the mid-end of novem so there is no way i was pregnant on the 9th when my last period came... we had fun twice that month so it could have been either the time of ovulation in one week or the week after, so if i thought i was 2 weeks preg then, maybe it makes sense if the GP said 5 weeks nearly? hmmm. i will go with that now. at least it will keep me less worried. :)

    fancy some fanta badly!! hehe

Rups - I might be wrong but I think when you get a BFP you would be at least 3 weeks pregnant

Not really though, as people can get a BFP at 10dpo, it's not really common, but it is possible.

Rups - BFP - Big fat positive on a pregnancy test :)

Gilly is right, cycles are all different, so its quite possible your dtaes got a bit wonky! My Luteal phase was a bit unusual- i definately dont ovulate on day 14- with 14 days to my period. When i was tracking my cycle before starting to TTC, my LP ( between OV and next period) was between 8-11 days, which meant my due date would have been upto 6 days wrong. As it was, cos i knew when i had Ov'd, and when we had DTD (down to 2 days), the doc and i manually adjusted the date of my last period.
