If you mean the nuchal fold test, it is done as part of your scan, they just measure the size of a part of the baby. One thing to consider is, if you are going to have a Down's baby, is it best to be forewarned so you can prepare yourself? Or would you rather not know until they arrive? Having the test doesn't mean you have to act on the results, just that you will then have the knowledge.

I thought Plans was referring to the amniocentrisis (apologies for spelling!) where they take amniotic fluid to test to determine risk of baby having Down's.. I might be wrong though :o

They only do the amniocentesis test here if they have reason to believe theres a high chance from the quad test, and even then you can refuse.

If theyd offered the nuchal fold at 12 week scan wed of had it done, as it wasnt offered we opted to have the blood test for the quad test, my oh has adopted siblings with downs so we are well aware of the problems and joys associated, we however wanted to know the risk level - if our quad comes back high we wont be pursuing the amnio we just wanted to have the forewarning and the chance to adapt our plans to the possibility of a high chance of Downs.

Flu jab - im getting it - a cold knocked me sideways for nearly 2weeks and it was just a cold, flu knocks me out when im not pregnant for a good week - i dont want to be flattened for 3 plus weeks and only have paracetemol to take.

I'm having the nuchal fold test, which here they do in conjunction with the blood tests to give you a risk of Downs. But i won;t do any further testing. OH likes to have an idea what to expect, so I have it for him, but I won;t have amnio because of the risk of miscarriage.

I'm also not sure about the flu jab. MW wants me to have it because 'last year we lost a lady to swine flu' but I'm going to look into it a bit more.

Jovi - you said you hoped you'd avoid sickness this time. I am so glad I have it this time cos last time I had none and then threw up all through labour! I know which I'd rather have!

DD is driving me nuts today. I feel so tired and sick I cannot cope with her being so very two!

Don't worry about no symptoms, my mum flew through both her pregnancies. Said she'd never felt better, she looked amazing according to everyone, was never sick and was calmer than she's ever been accroding to my dad. Also, she only felt my sister move a handful of times, whereas I didn't stop moving about, so I think all women and every pregnancy is different.

I am 99.9% sure I don't want the test for Down's, not sure what my husband's take on it will be, but I don't see the point in it, so I will convince him that we don't want that particular test!!

The flu jab I'm really undecided on. My doctor really tried to get me to sign up, but I said no for now.

Dont forget the test doesnt just check for Downs, it can be an indicator for all kinds of abnormalities.

Hi everyone, went to see the doctor today to get the ball rolling. I'm 6 weeks gone today. I have a few questions:

    1) the test for Down's - has anyone had this before? I'm not planning on having this test. I didn't have a 12 week scan with my eldest daughter, so don't know what to expect at this.

    2) the flu jab - again I wasn't going to have this either. What are your thoughts?

    3) is anyone else acting mental?? My husband has the patience of a saint at the minute. I burst into tears and then immediately flew into a rage yesterday because the chicken wasn't cooked when it should've been. Feel like I'm going crazy.

    4) I had TERRIBLE morning (and even all day) sickness in first trimester last time and it's starting again now. I was retching all morning. Any tips for lessening the effects of this?

    1) im not getting tested for this, i dont need it because even if the baby is downs it will have no effect on our feelings towards the baby.

    2) I am having mine on the 28th, there were alot of verry sick women last year and i dont fancy being one of them this year, also contracting the swine flu is not a good idea in pregnancy. this years flu jab has swine flu in it too.

    3) i do seem to be more short tempered than usual but we have alot going on and i was blaming tiredness

    4) the only thing i know of that actually works is ginger, but i detest the stuff so have just been getting on with it, altho it does seem to be subsiding alot.
  • Hi Ladies - Can I join you all... I am 10 weeks 2 days today!! I had my midwife booking in appointment yesterday - so awaiting the date of my 12 week scan. In my clinic it ranges from 12 weeks to 14 weeks - I hope its nearer 12 as I dont want to announce the news to family and friends until i know everything is ok.

I had an Ectopic pregnancy in Nov 2010 - so naturally this time i am really cautious. I have had 3 early scans already (week 6-8) so I know that the baby made it to the right place this time and HB was confirmed - so now waiting anxiously for the next scan before i start to relax a little!!

I have a 9 year old daughter already - so I am looking forward to breaking the news to her!! she will be a great help.

My diet has not been great since i have become pregnant - I seem to have totally gone off good and healthy food - and eating comforting food that I know makes me feel rubbish - The midwife yesterday said that is normal enough in the first trimester - so hoping that It improves soon - as starting to feel really sluggish and have put on about 1/2 stone since i discovered i am pregnant.. I have also be so tired - but think that is improving a bit now - so going to start next week and start exercising again - hope to get out for a daily walk - as I have stopped that too since i discovered I was pregnant.

I hope everyone is keeping well. I am so glad I stumbled across this thread!

Welcome Starfish! I am 10+3 today so we are due date buddies :D

I reached a personal milestone today. This time last pregnancy I started spotting and at 11 weeks I miscarried. If i can just reach Wednesday next week then I am past that and might, just might, be able to breathe. Maybe.

    :)

Can I join too? I'm aprox 10 weeks pregnant. Having my scan on 1st November and am counting down the days. DH and I are so excited!

I have had terrible tiredness and morning sickness for a while. Every time I think its going to go away it comes back. I have also been eating really badly. There are only certain (bad things) that stay down at the moment.

Hopefully if all goes well the sickness and tiredness will go away after my 12 week scan or at least I'll be able to tell people. DH and I have only told our parents and its so difficult keeping it a secret esp since I've been so sick at work and have started to put on weight.
