The abnormality scan is at 20 weeks though Laura. The one at around 12 weeks is only for dating and for measuring the fluid on the back of the neck to assess the risk of downs. You might also be able to tell at 12 weeks if the baby had spina bifida but other than that it is very limited because the baby isn't big enough or well formed enough to look at anything else in detail. Having your scan at 11 weeks or 13 weeks wouldn't make a difference to that, nor should it impact on the date for your abnormality scan I shouldn't think (though as I haven't had nhs care for any of my pregnancies thats a guess based on friends experiences)

What kind of birth defects are you worried about?

Really, as late as that? It doesn't say on the NACC information sheet for fertility, it just says one small study showed an increase in miscarriage or birth defects if the man took the drug in the 3 months before conception but it also says the reliability of the study has been questioned and other studies had not confirmed this risk. When I asked his consultant at the hospital about it he thought it was a load of nonsense - hopefully as he is the expert in this Country he is right!

How are you doing today? Better I hope x

Gillyx, is your bump quite big/visible at nearly 20 weeks then?

I would say so actually, but this time last week there was nothing. I already had a "tummy" wasn't massive but I thought this would mean I wouldn't see a bump emerge for a while. I'm seeing OH's parents this weekend, and they haven't saw me in a week so we'l see what they say!

I ask my OH but I think he's scared to say anything either way :o bless him.

If I was brave enough not to look like a fat lump I'd upload a picture :o

    Stressing myself out today :(
I had some more dark brown tinged mucus this morning and also a bit just now. It's the third and fourth time it's happened since my BFP. My
DH keeps telling me it's ok as it's not much (less than the size of my fingernail) and the midwife at my scan at six weeks said not to worry unless it's red, soaking through a pad an hour and I have clots the size of 50ps. So why am I still worried?!
I've also been having yellow-light brown tinged discharge but no itching or soreness and the doctor didn't seem concerned about this when I saw her.
Oh I wish it was three weeks Monday and I could have my scan :( I'm just so scared we are going to lose this one like we lost the last one :(

I know I need to stop worrying but I can't. Sorry for the moan.

    xx

  • Ohh emsbet *hugs* I am sure everything is absolutely fine, less than your fingernail sounds such a small amount, how far gone are you? As when I was 8 weeks I had a little bit of brown discharge and midwife told me it was something to do with being due on your period at that time and old blood making its way out.

I know its so hard not to worry, but the next few weeks will fly by and then you will have your scan and put your mind at rest. Could you call your midwife/doc? They may just be able to say something that will reassure you.

No big blood clots sounds like good news, I would worry if that was happening but it sounds very small amount and I am sure lots of people have that. I have def had some yellowy discharge too, I think the signs to look out for are smelliness coupled with lots of pain.

Its so sad what happened to you before, just try not to get yourself worked up. Your OH sounds lovely, I am sure he will be looking after you :) xxx

Thanks so much sunshine it seems to have stopped now (touch wood). I am 8+4 so maybe it's what you said? You're right it is a small amount and I am trying my best not to worry. I had a shower and that relaxed me a bit.

I have my booking in appointment a week tomorrow so I will try hang on until then and ask. Of course if it gets worse I will call.

Thanks again for the reassurance :)

    Thanks Mishka!
I've had the snotty like discharge and I had read that it's normal. It's just the blood that is scary. But I'm taking comfort in the fact that it's dark brown (and therefore old blood) and that it's only ever in small amounts.
Oh dear this pregnancy lark is a roller coaster eh? :):o
Thanks again ladies. You guys are awesome :)

Hello ladies, I recently discovered I am pregnant and could use a supportive place to chat :) I'm 5+4 and have been experiencing some spotting and discharge like Emsbet and others have been describing, it's all rather worrying and I'm finding concentrating at work pretty tough going at the mo. Tonight I decided to do a CB test which came back 3+ which is reassuring, but I've had slightly reddish blood too and am worried it might get heavier. I know there is nothing I can do but DH and I got married very recently and the pressure it pretty immense. I feel better for having written some of this down and it's lovely to have a place to share! Take care all, I'm looking forward to hearing more about your experiences and sharing the journey with you x

    Welcome Amymo  and congratulations!
If you are worried about the spotting it might be worth popping to the doctors to see if they can refer you for an early scan- it might put you mind at rest.
I've had spotting with both my pregnancies and had a six week scan with both. Unfortunately we lost the first but when we went this time all was ok and we saw the little heartbeat! :).
Spotting is very common in the first trimester and most people go on to have healthy babies. This is the fact I've been focusing on to keep me calm (which as you can tell from above doesn't always work ;))
I hope you spotting stops soon. Feel free to post as much as you need, everyone here is so nice and supportive. :)

No more spotting for me this evening. We've been out for tea which helped take my mind off things.

    Hope you are all ok.

    xx
