On the tea front, I had to cut down a lot, and found the easiest thing was to have half a cup - I 'forget' about the rest of it and let it go cold, if colleagues ask - easy way to cut down on caffeine without missing out on my first cup of the day, or the just after lunch one, or getting home from work... I had no idea how much tea and coffee I drank til I had to cut down!!

    Genius idea!

    Hi ,

Just lurking and reading even thoughhave hd my baby now....

Icey77 - I had mine at Watford and found it good. They have a birthing centre which is less medical and they have birth pools etc there. The main labour ward is just across the floor so if you need an epidural or anything you can easilly get moved over.

They were a bit busy when i first went in but after the first few hours i had my own personal midwife. I started in the birthing centre but ended up having an epidural and an emergency c section so was moved over. If you have any questions about it let me know.

I got to go on a tour a few weeks before as part of my antenatal class but i am sure you could arrange one before if you want to look at the hospitals before you commit.

Just thought I'd let you all know that Boots are doing 3 for 2 on vitamins and I got a voucher from the instore machines for 200 points when you spend £15 on vitamins, so managed to get three packs of vitamins for about £17 and 200 points on the advantage card.

Can I ask when other ladies decide to tell their employers? At the moment I am leaning towards the 10 week mark as my manager is back from holiday and can be a bit of a pain when it comes to time off for appointments etc.

I think whenever you are ready! If you're ill, as Kira said, then you'll probably have to. Also if you have the kind of job where you are otherwise expected to be lifting and carrying or on your feet all the time you'd need to mention it.

For a desk job, you'll need to consider what you said - planning for you being off and around essential work, but don't let that be your first priority. There aren't that many appointments early on anyway.

Personally, and probably because I don't have the best of relationships with my bosses at the moment, I'm planning to leave it as long as possible;). One person at work knows in case I have any problems, and she agrees with not telling them!

You have to tell your employer at least 15 weeks before the week you are due.

That said, it will probably be obvious before that, and once you do declare it to your employer you are much more protected in law than if your employer did not know you were pregnant.

Pregnancy is a 'protected characteristic' which means that employers cannot discriminate against you, in the same way they couldn't discriminate against someone because of their race, age, religion, disability etc.

Depending what your job is, your employer might want to change some expects of your job in order to protect you and your baby (and themselves from you suing them if anything happened!).

My advice would be to mention it asap unless you have a very good reason for not mentioning it. I think most employers appreciate the longest amount of time to plan for their employers taking leave.

My plan was to wait until the 12 week scan because we have a higher than normal chance of miscarriage and I don't feel I can celebrate yet. However, I had to tell my line manager earlier because I have been really ill and they wanted to send me to Occupational Health. I didn't want to waste their resources and also wanted to make sure I was more protected if I was going to be absent more from work.

Can I ask,is it normal to get a stitch like feeling in early preg? It happened to me in bed when I turned and it got me worried.
