Hi all, I have lurked on the forum for ages but finally registered so I could post here!
I am 8 weeks +1 and have a scan coming up on Wednesday. I've got an 8 week scan because of a previous pregnancy (my first one) that had some serious problems and unfortunately ended at 15 weeks in November.
Does any one have any experience of an 8 week scan? Other than checking if it's one or two, if there's a heartbeat etc can they more accurately date it? Can they do the nuchal measurement? Also can they scan externally or will they have to do an internal one (which my husband is a bit uncomfortable about)
Part of me is so excited about the scan but another part is worried about getting my hopes up too much after the previous pregnancy. I'm going to ask them to switch the monitor off during the scan because last time I saw the baby moving around on the monitor a few weeks before the pregnancy ended which made it that much more painful - this time I'm trying to get less attached if that makes sense...
I got hyperemesis last time but luckily my nausea isn't too bad so far. I think it might kick off this week because last time, 8 weeks was when I started throwing up every day! Plus I've come down with a cold and not being able to take anything other than paracetamol is rubbish.
Hope everyone else is doing ok and best of luck to people who have scans coming up.
I just had an 8 week scan today - the heartbeat was 170 and the baby measured 18 mm all of which I've been told is normal. I think if it is less than 120 bpm then that's not a good sign.
There's not a lot else they can really see at this stage - she could see the yolk sac which will be there until the placenta takes over at 12 weeks. She dated the pregnancy for me - it was pretty much what I already thought.
She could also see my ovaries and which one had done the job! Very interesting but not really all that relevant.
All I really wanted to know was - is it still alive - which was answered straight away as soon as I saw heartbeat.
They should be able to do an abdominal scan at this stage, so don't worry about having to have an internal one.
Good luck I know it is nerve wracking but if all is fine it's a wonderful feeling of relief when you get out of there!0 -
Thanks so much, that's really helpful! For some reason I thought they could do the NT scan at 8 weeks but I guess I'll have to wait until the 12 week one.
Glad everything went well at your scan!0 -

So sorry to hear of your loss.. everything crossed for a positive outcome for this little one. Was there nothing visible on the scan last time to indicate baby was not ok? just so they could check this time to reassure you.
Nuchal scan has to be done between 11 and 14 weeks.
At 8 weeks they do abdo scan. there will be a HB a head and body and arms and legs and a few internal organs are visible.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

I am back (well i never really went away as I have been lurking with interest!) because my hip pain has suddenly got a lot worse and I'm not sure what to do. It started off that my hips and thighs were painful to the touch but now my left hip hurts inside (the joint) and I'm struggling to walk! I'm only 5+3 and not met my midwife yet but I do have her number from my intro pack so do you think it's worth asking her about or should I just grin and bear it???
Maybe give her a call, you don't want it to get to the point where you can't walk.
Great news Luciferswench, good luck for tomorrow.
Welcome and congratulations Marsala, wishing you an extra sticky bean
Sounds like there's not much to see on an early scan, might see if I can ask OH for one at 9 weeks maybe.0 -
hi ladies, id like to tentatively join you
graduating from the TTC thread for the 2nd time (chemical in October) by my calculations im either 3+3 or 3+4 today so very early but i do feel totally different this time to what i did last time, so im hoping thats a good sign!
so nervous, but so happy
Massive congratulations Trina - you are another one I have been secretly stalking (in the nicest possible way of course:p!) as we were originally starting out on this thread together last year. Loads of sticky bean vibes to you x :j0 -

depends what you want to have a scan for - for me it was because chance of m/c goes down after 8 weeks with strong heartbeat so I got it more for reassurance than to see stuff. I will probably have another one at 16 weeks to find out the sex, as well as NHS ones at 12 weeks 20 weeks and then growth scans at 24/28/32.0 -
I am a big pink furry wuss..
I am so very very close to cancelling my booking appt. I don't want to tell OH, I want it all to myself, my secret, my baby. I know how illogical this is and totally irrational.. let's just blame the hormones.
I am having a quandary about everything at the moment. The 2 littlies have a complex double surname.. so.. I am wondering if I should discuss with OH about legally changing my surname to his so I am not the only one in the house with my maiden name which I absolutely loathe.. I got married at 19 to get rid of it!! Did I just admit that? lol.
I daren't even broach the subject with OH .. My goodness I need to get a serious grip.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Please don't cancel your appointment pigpen, you need to start getting care to keep you and baby well, you know this. OH can wait if that's what you think is best but you need to see the midwife0
