Whats your favourite excuse as to why youre not drinking at a Christmas/New Years party? I have several events to attend over the festive season and Im not sure I can use the antibiotics reason for 3 weeks.

I photographed a wedding on Saturday and since it was my friends wedding I was provided with a tab and champagne for the speeches, I used the excuse of driving, as I needed to but up early in the morning seemed to work ok :)

I'm going to tell family at the weekend so won't have to make any excuses with them, but I have no idea what to do about my work party tomorrow.

Since I got pregnant we have had 2 nights out already - this will be the third time I will have to make an excuse. 1st time I said I was on antibiotics, 2nd time I said I was on detox/diet...I have no idea what to say tomorrow. I can't say I am on antibiotics again as they all know I have not been ill or been to the docs. Can't say I'm driving as the lunch/night out is only round the corner from our office and no one ever brings their car into work anyway as we are in the city centre and parking is ridiculous. I think I will just say I'm not drinking and they can think whatever they want. I'll be telling them in the new year anyway...
  • I would just go with lovecake and dont say anything or you just arent fussed about drinking. I was at my work do earlier and thankfully everyone knows. Ah well i would rather be growing my little spud than having a knees up!

Dippy- i look like ive ate too many sweets, which i have.lol i would need to lose 3 pounds as ive gained half a stone! Some of my bras are getting tight but havent moved a size yet.

Couldn't then end up needing to scan more than once though? I've heard of a few ladies being scanned at 11 weeks and then having to go back again. Which is a bit of a pain with work and everything

I think that too but they insist on going on lmp.

However, I think they can date you from about 8 weeks its only the nuchal (sp?) scan that has to be done around 12 weeks I think? Which Im not bothered about getting. Infact would rather not have it.
  • I didnt have a nuchal scan, just a dating one. they didnt mention anything about downs tests and they dont offer any tests unless you want one.

  • Hello, mind if I join in? I've been lurking for a few weeks: am 9 + 1 and very surprised but thrilled to be expecting!

I had to dodge the Christmas party bullet last week, and ended up getting an alcohol free lager (poured into a half pint glass) and sipped at it all evening. My colleagues were all drinking wine and didn't seem to notice that I wasn't heading to the bar. Just an idea!

Or you could try pretending to be hungover and not able to face drinking again...

...of course that may lead to encouragement via 'hair of the dog' excuses!

Hi Claire - where I live you had to give permission for any blood tests (I had to sign a form), we chose not to have the combined screening (nuchal scan + blood test) and at my booking appointment the midwife ticked a box to say which tests I did and didn't want, and then I signed.

It's worth noting (and the sonographer will probably explain) that they still do the nuchal measurement, as it's one of the standard measurements they do, but it doesn't mean they are going to do the screening so don't worry if you see them doing that measurement at the scan.

Hope everybody is doing ok - I'm thinking of moving over to the other thread, am 13 +4 now... sickness is easing (only been sick once this week) but still feeling nauseous and quite a lot of disgusting retching!!

Will still lurk here - you have all been a fab support in this early stage, it can be such a worrying time and it's very reassuring to talk to others experiencing the same worries/symptoms etc!

Hope to see you lots of you on the next thread :) mrs j xx
