Ah! This is where the thread has been hiding :)

My wife and I found out we were expecting 8 days ago. In typical fashion she shoved a stick she'd pee'd on in my face and asked 'Does that mean I'm pregnant?'

Not quite how I was expecting the news to be broken but very much her. We're both delighted and anxious at the same time.

Been to the GP who wasn't the most socially skilled person I've ever met, just gave us a few leaflets to read and said we'd get a call from a midwife. Any ideas how long it should take for them to get in touch?

Another quick question: Does anyone have any convincing excuses as to why someone may not be drinking over the christmas period (given they normally would)

    hi everybody

Good luck to anybody with scans this week!

bodge - welcome and congratulations! It seems to vary in different parts of the country how soon you get the first midwife appointment. Generally the first appointment is between 8 and 12 weeks, I think. I had mine at 10 weeks. If you haven't heard anything in a couple of weeks, definitely chase up the referral as these things do have a habit of getting forgotten! Re: drinking - it's a tricky one, you could try the old antibiotics excuse but that usually raises suspicion. My sister in law told us she had a kidney infection and so couldn't drink when she was pregnant. Alternatively, lots of clever glass-swapping so that your wife ends up with your empty glass and you drink hers!

lovecake - sorry to hear you are not feeling great and haven't had your first appointment yet. Have you called to chase it up? I think booking a private scan is a good idea but it would be a shame for you to have to spend the money when you should be getting an NHS one around the same time.

I think I am another lucky one with a DH who has been picking up the slack while I've been feeling totally rough. I've decided to get him an iPad mini for Christmas as he really wants one - I wouldn't usually spend nearly that much on him, but I figure it's the last year for a while I'll be able to splash out, and he is very much a 'present' person so will feel appreciated I'm sure!

Thought I was feeling a bit better yesterday and wasn't sick, but the nausea and vomiting is back in full force today, feeling dreadful again. Am 12 weeks today (hooray!) really hope this starts easing soon so I can start to function a bit better!!

Have a good day everybody :)

Thanks for the sympathy mrsj. I called last Wednesday and they said 'we only (only!?) received your referral on the 15th November so you should get something in the post soon...' Whatever that is supposed to mean. It's just frustrating when you are feeling so ill and anxious and you just really want to talk to a midwife. Anyhoo - we'll just go ahead with the private scan if we don't hear soon.

Welcome bodge! Congrats to you and your OH! Excuses I have used so far are on antibiotics for wisdom tooth (everyone knows I have had lots of problems with them so quite believable) and on a detox/diet which wasn't questioned either so I think I have gotten away with it. We are hoping to tell family at Xmas so that will avoid having to make excuses then. One of my colleagues was prego last Xmas and when we went on our staff lunch/night out she just pretended to drink her wine and none of us noticed! I was sitting next to her and just assumed her glass had been topped up :rotfl:We all felt so daft that we hadn't even twigged that she was just pretending to drink! Hehe!

With regards to appointments I have no idea (as you can see from my post above). I went to the GP almost a month ago, I'm 10 weeks on Wednesday and still no booking appointment or scan. As mrsj says - you usually get your booking in appointment sometime shortly after 8 weeks and your scan should be as close to 12 weeks as possible, but if you live in a disorganised area like me then who knows! :rotfl:Hope your OH has a good first trimester - there are a fair few of us suffering!
  • Congrats on the 12 week milestone mrsj28 :)

lovecake, I'm right there with you, left my travel bands in the bathroom this morning and have been really rough today so they are safely back on now. Just been very sick (sorry if TMI) so eaten two oatcakes straight away as apparently eating straight after can help.

I'm getting really impatient for my scan date as I was promised it would be before the 18th. Although, our post usually only comes twice a week so maybe it's already set.

Are you about 10 weeks too Sparkles? Have you had your booking appointment yet? I feel like I'm the only one who has had no contact since I went to the GP...

Welcome and congrats! :j Fist thing to do is make sure you start taking folic acid if you aren't already and book an appointment with your GP or midwife to get the ball rolling :)

Yeah 10+2, I had my booking appointment last Monday. She rang me a few weeks ago to book it in. Can you try your GP again?

 I'm not sure I could cope with that!

Thanks for the welcome/congrats :) We've got the added mystery of not knowing how far gone we are. My wife had a procedure which caused bleeding which continued for best part of a month so masked her period. We think somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks!

I'm liking the kidney infection idea, a bit more unusual than antibiotics
