I'm just over 6 weeks mogwai. Been trying to keep snacking but there was just no holding it back this morning! It felt like it had been building up all week. What is a nuchal scan? I have no idea about any of this stuff yet :)

I'm going to have one - don't be put off if its something you think you want. If I come back as high risk, I will then have that additional test where they test the fluid via a needle (or something like that). I just couldn't bring a child with downs syndrome into the world knowingly - for their sake as much as mine (I won't be around forever to look out for him/her) - and I have been upfront with the midwife about this and she was very supportive.

Congratulations claire16c on your B'Day - what a day to throw up (without alcohol as well!!!!:D). I haven't been sick yet - but have terrible nausea throughout the day.

I'm 9+4-ish and have been feeling really dizzy this weekend - its still over 3 weeks until my scan - seems an age off! I am going to have to order some larger bottom sets of clothes - I am still really bloated (crisp induced fat/twins/too much fluid -who knows!). I can't do anything up - and the bump bands are great for hiding - but they don't seem to keep my open jeans from falling down!!!!:o

They look at the measurements of the fold of the baby's neck at the 12ish week scan to see whether you are a low/high risk of carrying a baby with downs syndrome - they can see this from the ultrasound scan. You can then have additional (more invasive) tests to see if the child has the faulty genes (or something like that). You can say whether you want the nuchal test or not at the 12 week scan.

one of which was whether I wanted a dating scan or the nuchal scan. It was clear from how she was describing it that she wasn't a fan of the nuchal scan as she kept asking me what I'd do if it came back with a high risk. She also said I couldn't then decide not to go ahead with the invasive tests if it was shown to be high risk, which I don't think is correct. To be honest it made me really doubt whether or not I should get a nuchal scan.
Not sure what the deal is in your part of the country (of course) but here the nuchal scan is done at the same time of the dating scan if you have it done - all they do is measure a bit of the back of the neck. If that's bigger than 'normal' it's a sign that you might be high risk. For me, they also took blood at the same time, and then send that off to the lab. The combined results of the measurement of the neck and the blood results as well as your age give you a risk level.

It's rubbish that she told you that you have to have the other tests if the nuchal comes back high risk. The deal is that if you come back high risk, they will offer you the further testing which you will need to do if you want to know for certain. In our case we wouldn't have had the further testing due to the miscarriage risk (it's one of those where you have more chance of losing a healthy baby to miscarriage than actually having a down's baby, even if the nuchal risk comes back high) and we wouldn't have aborted a down's baby. We did however opt for the first test as if the test did come back high risk we would want to tell family and friends of the likelihood and do some preparations ourselves in advance of the birth.

    Hi everyone! Welcome Claire! :)

Man am I feeling sick today :( I have still managed to fight it back, but feel so so nauseous! :( I also woke up during the night feeling sick which was horrible and I'm so tired today. It is really taking its toll on me - don't know how I will manage for another 5 weeks or more feeling like this :( We just have to get on with it I suppose!

To those suffering with sickness / nausea I have been trying to eat little and often as others have suggested and I just keep a stash of fruit, crackers and ginger biscuits in my drawer at work. Whenever I feel sick I just eat something and it seems to pass. I wouldn't want to start taking time off this early on or working from home just in case I need to do it further along. I think they would be far more inclined to let me do it in the later stages if I haven't been doing it right from the beginning of the pregnancy. I think they'd be a bit hacked off with that! Don't want to look like I'm taking the !!!!! Haha! :)

With regards to supplements - I've been taking a pregnancy multi-vitamin with folic acid all in one since I came off the pill - I think it's the Centrum one that I take - they sometimes have offers on them in Boots or Superdrug so I just stock up then. I feel much better for it actually so I think I'll just stick with that all the way through.

I'll be 7 weeks on Wednesday and I'm desparate to get a date through for my midwife appointment and scan! I just want it to be out in the open so I don't have to keep thinking of excuses to not go out. I will be so happy when I can just say 'Sorry, I am too tired' or 'Sorry, I am feeling really sick today' and there will be no questions asked!

Mogwai - I had my flu jab this morning and the nurse said I would need the whooping cough jab after 28 weeks. Sounds like the doctor was a bit confused..! You should have a flu jab though.

Yes i had my flu jab at about 16 weeks along with everyone else at the surgery flu jab clinics and while i was there the nurse told me to wait until i was 28 weeks and then to book a gp appointment to get the whooping cough jab so i don't think it should be done before then.

Same here - I've had my flu jab, but whooping cough is to be booked at 28 weeks as it is to protect baby in the first few weeks after birth.

Ah ok thanks. If I'm offered the choice I won't have it as I wouldn't do any thing like an amniocentesis anyway. Partly because I know some people with Downs but I respect its everyone's own choice.

I called in sick to work today as I was sick twice inthe night so was feeling rough plus not enough sleep. I'm hoping it won't happen tonight.
