binky, they'll test blood pressure at book-in as well as iron, but it'll take a while for the iron results to come back. If you think it's blood pressure (too low) you could try not getting too hot, making sure you eat (yes, I know!) and making sure you eat some salty-type things. Dried apricots are apparently good for iron esp if you have some vitamin c with them (like orange juice)

In my area the MW told me they'd ring in 1-2 days after bloods taken if there were any concerns so if low iron they'd ring and get you to collect a script from the GPs.

I think you can get your bp checked at Lloyd's pharmacies for free, if you don't want to wait for the booking in appointment binky?

    Hey Abby,

Yes, this is our first baby so everything is new. We haven't told many people yet - waiting till after the 12 wk scan, so we haven't had any generous offers yet.
It is difficult making excuses about not going out (because I've been in bed at 9pm for the last few weeks feeling absolutely shattered), making excuses while I eat constantly (cos I am sooo hungry all the time) and trying to hide throwing up in the work toilet (cos I feel sick most of the time).

    Hi Kezz,

I've always said that I wouldnt tell anyone until after the scan but have really struggled keeping it a secret. both grandparents know. How is the sickness going? ive been really lucky and havent had any sickness.

3 weeks tomorrow until the scan, we cant wait! seems like ages ago since we found out i was pregnant!

Both sets of our parents know - reasons being mainly linked to my daughter's birth... she came prematurely meaning we both got kept in hospital for a couple of weeks... while that's fine and good when you've only got that child to deal with, this time around there's HER to think about too - so we've given them as much advance warning as we can so they can make sure their diaries are such that if we need them down here at short notice - they've got the flexibility to do so. Sad that from the outset we've got the thought of another NICU stay on our mind - but I only cope by being as organised as possible (last time round I had the room done and everything bought by about 24 weeks and my bags packed by 30 - thank God!) and it's the first step toward making sure that organisation's in place for this pregnancy. I can control logistical arrangements - I can't control recurrent miscarriages or the possibility of another unexplained PPROM.

  • binky, hope you start feeling a bit better soon.

I've got out of bed and got dressed for the first time in 3 days. Rang to make an emergency appt with dr this morning due to feel feeling so rough and they were useless! He said i would just have to wait for it to clear up! 3rd night last night of waking up nealry every hour coughing, my poor OH!

Do feel a little better, just absolutely sick of my chesty cough so im hoping that will go. May go to work tomorrow to catch up on things and then have annual leave on friday so a very short working week for me!

Can anyone help me with the following? I know different employers have different maternity provisions but do you think it will be possible to take all my 2013 annual leave before I go on Maternity? I have 30 days A/L each year and I was thinking of taking it before I start maternity in mid March. Then once my 9 months paid maternity is up at the end of dec 2013 i would take the remaining 3 months as unpaid?

re: the annual leave, yes if you're not planning to return before the end of your holiday year you should take it all at the start, with the proviso that the latest your maternity can start is the sunday before your due date (expected week of childbirth) and if they come earlier it automatically starts on their birth date.

I developed an awful cough/sore throat when I was about 8-9 weeks pregnant, was much much worse when lying down, and it turned out to be reflux. Have been on ranitidine ever since and had no problems. Can't remember if you have other cold symptoms but if it's just a cough/sore throat it's worth getting checked out.

    :wave:Hello ladies, how is everyone?

Is time moving reaaaaaaalllllly slowly or is it just me?:rotfl:

I'm now 11 + 5 and finally got my scan appointment for 3rd September. I can't wait!! I'll be 13 + 3 by then, apparently the further on you are the clearer the pic is!

Symptom wise nothing much happening for me this week other than my face being COVERED in spots. Really it's so bad I'm thinking of taking some annual leave so I don't have to go to work looking like this! Does anyone know if this is one of the symptoms which *should* disappear after the first trimester? Or am I likely to be stuck looking like this for at least another 6 months?

Spots can come and go throughout the pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy I used to get bad spots, then when I found out I was pregnant, they started to get better, second trimester I started to get a few more, and now I'm back to being fairly clear-skinned again. Just wish I could get rid of the scarring from previous ones as it makes it look like I have them even when they're gone.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

My doppler arrived today and I couldnt resist having a go!

I've kind found a sound that sound like that whoosy train sound, but it's only half as fast as I think it should be (I've been watching youtube videos on how to use it!) - would that be my own heartbeat/stuff pumping around me?

I wasn't expecting to hear anything, considering I will only be 10 weeks tomorrow, but thought it would be a nice surprise if I did! I'll still have a bit of a play with it!

Oh and did anybody do theirs with a full bladder. It doesn't say anything in the instruction booklet, but thought I'd try that too! I have nothing better to do tonight :D

When i use mine the placenta makes a whoosh sound (like wind ish) and the heartbeat sounds like a train - quite a galloping sound.

takes a lot of patience to find the right sound early on, try changing the angle rather than moving across your tummy.

I can't find anything fast sounding, so guessing I must have found my own heartbeat?! Can you find your own heartbeat down there?
