got a letter last week asking me to attend a 'first steps in pregnancy session' at my local walk in centre. Apparently this forms part of my antenatal care and gives:
    an introduction to maternity services
common pregnancy symptoms and how to cope
    antenatal notes and screening explained
    your appointment pathway
myths and facts about foods to avoid
    your rights and benefits
    lifestyle choices
info about aquanatal and antenatal classes
Has anyone else been offered similar? This is my second baby but it was five years ago so i guess the process may have changed so hopefully i will find out something useful.
I was a bit annoyed though to receive the letter in the post on friday pm to attend monday am! Not much time to sort out time to go!
Hope everyone has had a good weekend :)

Where abouts in the country are you binkyboo? I didnt have anything like- that went straight to my midwife, who just did lots of paperwork and weighed me/bloods etc. She was a bit useless with some questions I had too, I think I would have quite liked something like what you have! :D

It is pretty terrible they didnt send you much notice though- very unlike the NHS?!

I'm in the north west. The lady who ran the session was a health care trainer. She said government guidelines suggest a two tier approach to care in early pregnancy so a session like this and your booking in appointment.

It was pretty much explaining symptoms, what not to eat, not
Smoking, no alcohol. We were told to get a flu jab so that was something I hadn't considered and we were told about intervals between scans and appointments, parent craft classes, how to arrange a delivery suite visit to look around and where to go for aqua natal classes. I also found out that my area
Provides free vitamins for all pregnant women just have to go to my local children's centre each month to pick them up.

    Its all very fancy!

Oh aqua natal, that wasnt something I had heard of all considered! Definitely want to research that - I have back problems, so my exercie regime is a little, shall we say - limited! :p

I also want to go to a parent craft class.

I like the service you've got! It's not fair we dont all get the same, its such a postcode lottery!!

Our aquanatal is at our local council run leisure centre and just costs the price of a swim. Not sure when I will start going but I think they are once a week so you may have something similar near you.

I think it's a real shame that the levels and standards of care are not the same wherever you live. I guess it's all about staff shortages and budget cuts, I remember getting a lovely book when i was pregnant with my first all about pregnancy and labour and that has now been stopped and replaced with a digital copy you can download online to save money!

I'm going to my first aqua-natal class on Wednesday so will let you know how it goes - bare in mind that I'm 35 + 3 by then though and other than walking, won't have done much exercise up until now.

Parentcraft classes are definitely worth going to though - we did NCT ones (quite expensive) and also did an NHS one on active births and water births that included a tour of the labour ward and birth centre. If you want to go on the NHS courses, my trust let you book online, but you need to be quick, as they fill up quickly due to the fact they are free.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

Our parent craft classes are just drop in sessions of one hour a week in the daytime for 4 weeks and each class covers a different topic. Once will be covering early labour and ways to manage the pain, next will be a session about giving birth, another will be about breastfeeding and another will be about something i've forgotten at the moment!

They also have evening classes but these you have to book to attend and have limited availability. I think we were tld to ask at our 16 week appointment if we wanted to book on to these but they cover the same info as the drop in sessions.

As binkyboo says, parentcraft seems to be the new name for antenatal classes.
