Does everyone get offered it? I don't think we will, it wouldn't bother me if our baby had downs.
Does this test pose any risks to the baby, if yes - we wont get it done.
We wouldn't abort a baby who had a high risk of downs, so if we could get the test done with no risks, we will - just so we know/are prepared.Baby 2b born March 2013! :j:j:j0 -

They'll prob change their minds though - I've got a cleft lip and palate and the mw seemed to think I might need more monitoring? Also we had fertility issues so I'm not sure if that plays a part in it too?
I'm under consultant led care for my thyroid condition, so far (24 weeks) I've had 3 appointments with consultant on top of the normal ones with midwife. Might be that you see the obstetrics consultant, and they do an extra thorough 20week scan to check for a cleft, or scans later in pg, if 20 weeks is too early. I seem to remember that on OBEM last series there was a couple who's baby had a cleft lip, which had been picked up at a scan.Little monkey born November 2012:jFroglet due March 2016

Nuchal fold test is just a measurement they take on the scan, plus some bloods from you - they combine results in some sort of complex algorithm to produce a risk eg 1 in 24000. I believe "high risk" is 1 in 50, which is still only 0.5% chance. But you could then choose to have one of the more invasive tests (amniocentesis, CVS) to confirm/rule out. We had the nuchal fold test but wouldn't have had any of the others, as we wouldn't abort a down's baby but would use the knowledge to prepare/read up if it came back high risk.Little monkey born November 2012:jFroglet due March 2016

...and the invasive tests do have a risk of miscarriage, I can't remember the exact stats but it was along the lines of having a higher chance of miscarrying a healthy baby as a result than actually having a Down's baby in the first place :eek:LittleMoog wrote: »Nuchal fold test is just a measurement they take on the scan, plus some bloods from you - they combine results in some sort of complex algorithm to produce a risk eg 1 in 24000. 2b, I think they can tell from the scan, if not they can do an amniocentesis test where they put a needle through your abdominal wall and collect some amniotic fluid, I think!0
